In the 16th and 17th centuries, Belize was a hideout for British and Scottish pirates known as “Baymen,” who preyed on Spanish ships. They eventually settled down and became loggers.

On September 10th, 1798, the British side finally beat an overwhelming Spanish force in the Battle of St. George's Caye. The Spanish retreated and never again tried to control Belize.
