Black Rock Lodge at the Belize Birding Festival! 🇧🇿
The Belize Birding Festival is an annual celebration of Belize’s incredible birdlife and the growing passion for birdwatching. It brings together birders, guides, conservationists, tourism businesses, local communities, and visitors to celebrate the amazing diversity of birds found across our country—and to encourage more people to discover birding.
This year was no exception for Black Rock Lodge! We are proud to have been part of every single one of the six Belize Birding Festivals, representing the lodge, promoting birdwatching, and connecting with fellow bird lovers from Belize and around the world.
Over the years, we’ve watched the festival travel to different parts of the country, reaching almost all six districts of Belize, bringing the love of birds to new communities and audiences.
Visitors this year had the chance to learn more about the incredible birding experiences available at Black Rock Lodge, from guided birding adventures and migration to our resident tropical species and spectacular birds of prey. And, of course, there were some great prizes to be won!

A little surprise this morning at Black Rock Lodge!
A Gray-cheeked Thrush made an appearance—a beautiful and elusive migrant on an extraordinary journey from the boreal forests of Alaska and Canada to its wintering grounds in South America.
For these remarkable travelers, Belize is an important stop along the way: a place to rest, refuel and continue their journey. And for us, it’s a wonderful reminder of just how much life moves through the forests surrounding Black Rock.
You never quite know what you’ll discover here.
One morning it might be a migrant thrush quietly moving through the canopy. Another, the flash of a toucan, the call of a motmot, or the tracks of something wild along the river.

165 species—and Fall migration is settling in at Black Rock Lodge!
Today, part of our guiding team started a bird survey at 6:00 AM, with one goal: to get a better feel for what is moving through the area and which migratory species have arrived as Fall migration gets underway.
We were pleasantly surprised by several Swainson’s Warblers, along with many other migrants including Hooded Warblers, Kentucky Warblers, Black-and-white Warblers, Ovenbirds, and Alder Flycatchers. We also enjoyed our many resident species and some exciting birds of prey, including migrating Broad-winged Hawks.
By the end of the survey, we had recorded an incredible 165 species right here around Black Rock Lodge!
