Breadfruit!

One of the most satisfying crops you can grow, and with such low labour inputs needed - very efficient calorie production in terms of energy expended. They literally grow on trees... Very versatile and tasty, too. You can never have too much breadfruit planted on your farm. Good to have a tree in your yard too if possible!

Anolis sagrei, on the hence by the water tap.

Such strange weather at the moment... Dry season really isn't behaving anything like you'd expect this year. Nice and sunny one minute, raining hard the next... Feels like it might be another unsettled night. Hard to do your laundry!

Always an absolute pleasure to see a keel-billed toucan, Belize's national bird. They're fairly common at Checo Hill, which to be honest is pretty awesome! This one was just across from the house, enjoying the sun in a cecropia tree.

(Sorry for the slightly shaky video: I didn't have access to a tripod.)

Always happy to have more trees coming along... This mango and these Suriname cherries should hopefully be ready to go in the ground at the start of the next rainy season.

A nice little harvest from the farm: bread fruit and sapodilla. Both very tasty and much appreciated! I planted both these trees seven years or so ago: it's so rewarding when you start obtaining a regular yield.

You can't go wrong with home grown limes... So tasty. Could do with a few more on the bush right now, to be honest! You can never have too many.

This is the original tree from which many of the lime bushes on the farm are descended. It's a good one!

I've been following this organisation's work for several years now. Very interesting!

Chaya (Cnidoscolos aconitifolius): you can never have too much of this in your garden or on your farm! It's an extremely nutritious leafy green, and can be used in an kinds of dishes. (It does have to be cooked, though: you can't use it raw.)

It's very easy to propagate: break off a branch, stick it in the ground, and that's it. Once it's rooted it takes very little subsequent care, and there aren't many pests that trouble it.

We use it in scrambled eggs, in soups, stews, etc. It's very versatile!

Good strong growth on this recently germinated avocado. This one most likely won't be ready to plant out this rainy season, but should be in good shape next year. Exciting!

Tiny plantains recently emerged from the ground. I'm hoping there's still enough of the rainy season left for these to get properly established: I was rather late planting them this year, for one reason and another. Fingers crossed for them! Still have a few more to plant: it feels very much like time is running out!

They need cleaning around and mulching (heavily) too!

This is a Honduran variety that likes plenty of water, watch is partly why I've been delaying getting them planted: it's been a pretty dry rainy season up until last month.

Look at this very pretty little beastie that Adam found the other night: a Sumichrast's vesper rat. We occasionally see these in the forest around Checo Hill: they whistle (yes, really!) from the trees at night during mating season.
