The house, built about 1817, remains a carefully preserved home where historic architecture, antique furnishings, and gardens by the water are part of everyday life rather than a museum exhibit. Those who stay here are invited to enjoy the same cool breezes, quiet surroundings, and sense of continuity that have drawn summer visitors to this shoreline for more than two centuries.

The Annapolis River carries a thermal capacity each tide sufficient to cool a city the size of Boston. We have recently finalized several conservation initiatives designed to harness this natural cycle, maintaining a tradition of waterfront cooling that dates back four centuries.
By utilizing the river’s inherent movement, we forgo the intrusive noise of mechanical air conditioning in favor of a silent, historical equilibrium. The house remains cooled as it was in the 1800s: by the water itself. We are so confident in the improvements, we’ve added extra wool blankets to be “on call” in every room.
