*Chandos Lake History*
Chandos Lake in North Kawartha was originally known as Mongosogan by the Mississauga Anishinaabe and later as Loon Lake, before being renamed Chandos Lake in 1937.
Early settlement began in the 1860s, followed by a major logging era that lasted until about 1930. In the early 1900s, fishing camps and lodges attracted visitors (we have one of the original fishing camp cabins on our property!), and after the World Wars, cottaging began to flourish.
From roughly 150 cottages in the late 1940s, the lake has grown to more than 1,200 cottages today - evolving from a traditional Indigenous landscape and logging community into the vibrant cottaging community it is today. ❤️
