It’s herring spawning season throughout the BC coast. In late February, herring spawned in the bay in front of Pacific Sounds Lodge for the first time in 50 years. Whales and sea lions were observed gorging themselves. We can’t think of a better way to welcome spring.

The convoluted geology of Barkley Sound is a paddler’s paradise that set the backdrop for our first ever kayak retreat. Amazing guests, expert guiding, extraordinary cuisine, live music and abundant wildlife made it a trip to remember.

August on the outer coast marks a subtle shift. 
 
Summer always seems to pass too quickly, but we’re not done yet. There’s still plenty of time to welcome guests to this remarkable part of the coast through the rest of the summer and into fall, when the rainforest takes on deeper hues and the rhythms of the season begin to change.

There’s still so much to experience, and we look forward to welcoming you soon.

Here on the edge of the continent, Earth Day sounds like waves breaking on the shore, the wind moving through Sitka spruce, and the cry of a bald eagle circling high above the inlet.

At Pacific Sounds Lodge, every day is a reminder of our place within this coastal ecosystem—where the rhythms of tides, seasons, and songs shape how we live, learn, and gather.

Today, we pause to reflect on what it means to belong to a place. To care for it. To listen closely. And to act with intention so that future generations can walk these same beaches, hear these same sounds, and feel the same sense of wonder.

Big news from the edge of Canada’s Pacific Coast! The latest issue of Explore (Spring 2025) features an article by Andrew Findlay celebrating the spirit of Bamfield—a place where community and wild coastal landscapes are intrinsically woven together.

Pacific Sounds Lodge is honoured to be featured the heart of this story, with our co-owner Scott Wallace leading a group of Pacific Sounds’ guests along Bamfield’s rugged shoreline. We are excited to re-introduce ourselves as Pacific Sounds Lodge! Our new name was inspired by:

The Sounds of the Pacific Ocean - The ever-present rhythm of the waves and the cycles of the tides lapping the shorelines and bellowing through sea caves.

Our Sense of Place - Situated in Barkley Sound, the lodge sits at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, in a rich historical setting that has played host to the sounds of human communities and connections for millennia.

The Music of Gathering - The joyful sounds of friends and community gathering in a place perfectly situated and designed for connection, from shared laughter at a table to the harmony of song around a fire.

The Soundscape of Canada’s West Coast - A cackling oystercatcher, the deep exhalation of a whale, rainforest songbirds, the persistent call of our ‘Whistle Buoy’, and the gentle sound of rain on cedars, just to name a few.
