Pipe and drape systems are the most common solution for stage setups, but they’re not always the better choice. 👷

Pipe and drape excels in certain situations, such as:

→ Partitioning a space into smaller areas (e.g., temporary dressing rooms, green rooms, VIP areas)

→ Hiding venue features and structures like walls, service doors, and wiring

→ Simple backdrops for photoshoots and booths

→ Cutting echoes in large rooms with poor acoustics

→ Travelling shows where portability and easy setup are key

With that said, pipe and drape can’t do everything. If you need something to physically restrict access, offer superior soundproofing, have load-bearing capabilities, or hold up outside, other drapery and stage setup options might be a better solution.

They're part of every pipe and drape rental we send out, used to keep your base plates stable and your uprights standing tall. Each one of our rental sandbags is 15 lbs, which Jennifer, our General Manager, is happy to demonstrate.

Drape systems should last decades, but many of them just don’t. Here’s what you actually need to know about the longevity of stage drapery. 🪡

Too often, drapery companies sell their clients on fabrics that are either too cheap to be reliable for the long-term, or are just completely wrong for the applications. It’s also common for companies to provide improper guidance on maintaining fire-retardant (FR) fabrics, which means they become less safe over time.

We also often see draperies that are simply improperly sized for the space or aren’t designed for the use that they’re actually seeing on a daily basis. Add on the realities of poor stitching, unfinished seams, and a lack of reinforcement like grommets and pleats at stress points, and you’ll start to see why so many drapes start to fail within just a few years of use.

FR vs IFR fabric. Here's what actually matters. 🧵

If you've been researching stage drapery, you've probably seen both terms. They're not the same, and the difference affects your maintenance schedule, your budget, and your long-term safety compliance.

Inherently Flame Retardant (IFR):

Fire resistance is built into the fibre itself. It never washes out. Lower maintenance, higher upfront cost. Best for permanent installs, schools, and busy venues.

Flame Retardant (FR):

A protective coating is applied to the surface of the fabric. It works, but it usually needs to be reapplied every 5 years, depending on the material. It requires specialized dry cleaning, lower upfront cost, and higher ongoing maintenance.

Neither is automatically the better choice. It comes down to how your space is used, how often, and what your budget looks like over time.

Rentals are for when you need to move fast. Our dry hire inventory gives you access to high-quality, locally made drapery on a quick turnaround. You handle the install, we handle the inventory. Perfect for one-time events, temporary setups, or last-minute venue changes.

We recently had the opportunity to fulfill this supply order to the folks at Sherwood Mountain Brewhouse Ltd. in Terrace, BC. We sold them a drape attached to the pipe in front of their roll-up door, as well as manufactured the drapes you see hanging in the space.
