I originally posted this only to camp members but I decided to share it with a wider audience:
The deer hunt of 2021 is, with hope, the last under the Covid pandemic. We really missed seeing some of our members from the USA and Canada and we truly hope that everyone is free to hunt at camp in 2022. We also hope there will be more doe tags available since does were nearly all that we saw during the two weeks of the hunt. Congratulations to the "big" buck winners: Brad Martin in week one and Brain of the Toronto gang with a nice 12 pointer in week two.
Behind the scenes there is a lot of work that goes on before the first gun comes out of its case. Aside from the planning, stand work, trail marking, fuel buying, dog tending, book keeping and other chores the members take care of, there are other less visible people that make our hunts the great experience that they are. I just want to take a few sentences to let everyone know just who we need to thank:
First and foremost are the cooking staff of Pat Dicks, Wayne and Lori Wagner who have always gone above and beyond the duty of making and serving meals. Their great cooking, lunchtime soups and 'can do!' attitude allow the hunters to have a great time even if they never see a deer. This is their last year cooking for us and they will leave some big pot holders to fill. We really appreciate all the great meals, friendly chatter and smiling faces that they have greeted us with over the years.
Before the hunt even begins there are people who we do not see who also put in a great effort to keep the hunters well fed and happy:
Rebecca Dicks helped do the shopping for the camp groceries and baked all the delicious cookies, brownies and date squares for the first week and part of of the second week of the hunt.
Barb Dicks made all the pastry for the first week and the tasty banana and marmalade loaves.
Before she even got to camp Pat Dicks made chocolate chip cookies, homemade bread, butter and beet pickles and cranberries to fill our bottomless pits.
Lori Wagner also started well before getting into camp by making baked beans and hummingbird cakes for both weeks. (One of those cakes had candles just for me!)
Everyone of us should take note of these people and when we see them, thank them for doing the great jobs that they do.
