A glimpse into the Crystal Ballroom’s past: the iconic space once featured an elegant glass conservatory overlooking the railway tracks. Originally the hotel’s main dining room, the semi-circular bay at the south end of the room added to the grandeur of Palliser’s railway-era design.

In 1955, the conservatory was removed to help eliminate a bottleneck in the train tracks behind the hotel. But a piece of its history lived on, when restaurateur Hy Aisenstat purchased the curved glass and incorporated it into his nearby restaurant, Hy’s Steak House.

The hotel’s dance orchestra is pictured in front of the conservatory, circa 1921–1922. Today, the Crystal Ballroom continues to showcase its historic character, with the original pillars and elaborately moulded ceiling preserving the space’s rich heritage.

As the dust settles on another Calgary Stampede, we’re taking a look back on memories over the years.

The Stampede parade in 1925 took on the form of a historical pageant with a new route alone 9th Avenue, positioning Palliser along the parade route for the first time.

Calgary Stampede founder Guy Weadick and the Stampede’s original financial backers stand behind the hotel in 1919. Palliser maintained a hospitality suite known as the ‘snake room’ where Weadick entertained cowboys and celebrities. The hotel was characterized as the unofficial Stampede headquarters.
