A building is made of sandstone, concrete, and steel. But an iconic landmark is forged through time, built by the countless stories, generations, and defining moments held within its walls.

For more than a century, Palliser has stood as one of Calgary’s most enduring landmarks, having witnessed its evolution through time. Today we celebrate not only an anniversary, but a legacy shaped by timeless hospitality.

Here’s to 112 years of history, memories, and the stories yet to be written.

King George VI and Queen Elizabeth arrived in Calgary on May 26, 1939 aboard the Royal Train, stationed behind the hotel. Their motorcade is pictured passing in front of the hotel on 9th Avenue during a historic royal visit that drew crowds from across the city.

For generations, Palliser has stood at the heart of Calgary’s most historic moments and celebrations, both witnessing and shaping the city’s story.

Do you know the story behind the Fairmont name? It begins at the original Fairmont, , whose name helped launch an international brand.

James Graham Fair, an Irish immigrant, moved to California in the mid-1800s and found fortune in the silver mines. He purchased land atop Nob Hill in San Francisco with plans to construct a palatial estate. Though he was unable to realize this dream during his life, following his death, the land passed to his daughter Tessie. Along with her sister Birdie, they fulfilled their father's vision by constructing a majestic hotel. They named it using the family name "Fair", and the hotel’s location on top of a hill ("Mont") to create the stately moniker. Opening on April 18th, 1907, Fairmont San Francisco would come to be known as “a hotel so grand they built a city around it.”

That same spirit continues at Fairmont Palliser, a landmark that has stood as part of Calgary’s heritage for over a century as the city has grown around it. We are proud to be part of a global Fairmont legacy defined by timeless hospitality and iconic destinations.
