"Why is that bike path so wide?" 🤔

That’s probably a question you’ve asked yourself as you’ve seen our distinctive orange and grey separated pathways appear throughout our community.

Yes! These multi-use paths are wide, and that is intentional. They are designed to give plenty of space for people walking, biking, roller skiing, pushing strollers, or using mobility aids. When people feel safe and separated from vehicle traffic, they’re more likely to choose active ways to get around.

It’s all part of how we’re planning for Canmore’s future. Wider paths help move more people efficiently, especially since cars carry only a few people but need a lot of space. We’re building a safer, more direct, and enjoyable transportation network that makes walking, rolling, and riding easier to choose for trips around town.

And as Canmore continues to grow, these pathways are built to meet increasing demand. They’re also key to reaching one of our key transportation goals: by 2030, we hope to see 40% of trips in town to be made without a car, helping reduce our environmental impact and easing pressure on our road network.

Elk Mating (Rutting) Season is Here

Elk may look gentle, but they can injure or kill you and/or your pets. They may attack without warning, especially during their calving season in Spring (May-June) and in the Fall (September-October) during the mating season.

⚠️ Give wildlife space for your safety and theirs. Stay on designated trails and respect trail closures or restrictions and always stay a safe distance away of at least 30 metres.
⚠️ Keep your pets on a leash. An off-leash dog may provoke an elk to become aggressive as they may view the dog as a predator like a wolf or coyote.
⚠️ Always carry bear spray and be prepared to use it.
⚠️ Report people approaching wildlife or elk acting aggressively. Call 403.591.7755
