Friends of Windmill Point

Friends of Windmill Point The Windmill structure was constructed in the early 1830's as a gristmill for grinding grain. The mill was converted into a lighthouse in the 1870's.

A non profit organization whose objects are to increase both awareness about the Battle of the Windmill and visitors enjoyment of the historic site, in cooperation with Parks Canada, In November of 1838 it was the site of the Battle of the Windmill fought between approximately 200 insurgents from the United States sympathetic to the 1837 Rebellions in Canada and local militia and British soldiers.

The Windmill continued to function as a lighthouse until 1978, when it was removed from service. The Windmill has been a National Historic Site since 1920, but the only information visitors could get about the battle was contained in brief texts of plaques installed at the site from time to time. In 1994 a group of concerned local citizens founded the Friends of Windmill Point and in cooperation with Parks Canada have developed public programs and educational exhibits. Staffed with volunteers the Windmill was opened to the public in 1996.
