Well, the lupins are blooming by the roadside... too bad the tourists who come after the first week of July will miss them. The folks who come for the Festival of Small Halls running right now get the best views of them. The peonies are ready to pop, the phlox is perfuming the border around the house and Irises have arisen that I have not seen before- I must have planted them years ago and they have just been waiting for a huge horse chestnut to be removed so they could get more sun and SURPRISE!

So the SEASON has started. There are strangers on the streets, it's the long weekend. The lobster boats have been lobstering and the best floating restaurant, the Cork And Cast is back at its summer moorings. Daytime temperatures are double digit... we even got above 20 degrees one day so the outdoor patios are buzzing with patrons and mask are off if you feel courageous enough. My only dread??? Fruit flies.

The first cruise ship since Covid has been to Charlottetown with over 300 passengers who all had a lobster feed at a local restaurant - probably the only one in town that could handle so many. I always suggest going out of town for a lobster dinner but those places are not open as our lobster fishers have not had setting day yet. So the passengers ate Nova Scotia lobsters, not ours. But it's going to be very expensive this year judging by the anticipated prices. Am always happy to make good recommendations to my guests on where to eat. Cruise ships don't provide any boost for the accommodations sector as they do not stay overnight but you hope they like what they see when they are here and plan to come back for a longer stay. The weather was not very nice for them..... it snowed the day before....

Crocuses are finally blooming and have naturalized all over the lawn in the back yard. Raked up loads of leaves left lying for the winter. All that is needed is some sunshine to revive the lawn and we can truly believe spring has finally arrived. What's next? Spring cleaning after all the winter residents have left at the end of the month.

Another day of snow yesterday but a big melt today with the sun shining so I enjoyed my waterfront walk. A couple of inches of tulip leaves peeping out of the ground and no more ice in the harbour. Spring is slow - not springing fast enough for me!

03/30/2022

OK so the snow had all gone and I was able to walk straight out of my front door down the footpath to the sidewalk for the first time this winter. Not for long. There is a foot of wet heavy snow out there now and the one inch of tulip leaf that I saw yesterday in the border is buried. Thank goodness tulips are tough.

After a long and weary winter, there are signs of spring out there. The ice has almost all disappeared from the harbour,w some flocks of geese flew honking overhead as I walked along the waterfront and I no longer have to wear winter boots. There is a new spring in my step when I wear my sneakers. Coming slowly out of Covid restrictions here on the Island and I have more reservations for this time of year than I ever had! Looks like it will be a busy summer. Thanks to all of you who have booked with me. I look forward to hosting you .

That last storm arrived about 8am and was pretty fierce with a whistling wind followed by rain so everything shut down (and my hair appointment was cancelled) but by the end of the day there was more traffic getting around so it was not a traumatic weather event- no one lost power which is customarily a good (!!) indicator that we are being walloped. The temperature plummeted and is minus 20 tonight but the days have been bright and sunny and in the porch you can feel the heat of the sun coming through the windows.

So the storm that came was hardly worth noting - a few inches of snow and a bit of wind and certainly not one for battening down the hatches, It may have been more severe on other parts of the Island. In the city the buildings protect us a bit from the blowing snow but in the country where there are open fields there can be a lot of that making driving very dicey. The wind has been fierce for a couple of days and the next storm is tomorrow, Jan 9. I like having notification of weather alerts on my cell- in the old days up north, you had to guess what the weather was going to be if you planned on going anywhere.

Second snow storm of the year on its way for Sunday. I think I will post the storm activity this winter since many of my guests ask what the weather is like at this time of year- they love our summers but …. I shovelled about 2 feet of snow off the back porch where it had been blown in by the wind. I may have to hire someone to remove the accumulation off the roof of the extension at the back of the house.

A good start to the new year here. A blizzard and loads of snow. Good thing there is a brand new roof on the house which was finished on Christmas Eve by the wonderful guys at Richards Roofing. So, there are no blown off shingles lying on the ground today-there were a lot that flew off in November. Now we are warm, dry and well protected.
