And now three of the caboose’s are gone. Thank you for the memories.
Hostelling International Canada I miss being part of the community, but it was a good 30 years. Lots of memory, lots of friends.

I am so saddened

30 years ago today, The Squilax General Store and Hostel opened. It operated out of the main building for the first 2 years while the cabooses arrived (September) and renovated. It has been an amazing 30 years with fascinating guests from professional flamenco dancers to telly tub writers. Relationships were forged and even some weddings.
But now is time to move to another chapter. The hostel will be closing after this season. post us your favourite story, photo or video and win a night at the hostel during our last season.
With love from the crew and critters at Squilax

HI Canada is proud to be founded by women.

Nearly 90 years after these sisters, Mary Belle and Catherine Barclay, set off into the Alberta wilderness and established Canada's first hostel and what would eventually become HI Canada, we continue to be fuelled and inspired by women who are drawn to the unknown, the unfamiliar, the uncharted.

To the adventurers, explorers, wanderers, seekers, travellers and co-conspirators, Happy International Women's Day. ✊

Lifetime member Donna Spears (first from left) has passed away. Her parents were the first "house parents" at HI-Castle Mountain Hostel. Her mother Flo is 2nd from the right on the photo.
Donna hand split the cedar shakes for the roof at Castle.
She lead an interesting life from running for Calgary Stampede Queen to running the Scotch Creek Store to working at Captain's Village Marina.
RIP Donna
