There’s something wonderful about wandering between the shelves of a bookshop.

When we began curating the library for our Copper Crown Suite, we visited The Book Man in downtown Chilliwack. It’s the sort of bookstore where you never quite know what you’ll find and, if you’re lucky, one of the resident cats might even lead you to a hidden shelf you might have otherwise missed.

And, since today is Love Your Bookshop Day, it seemed like a good excuse to remember where the books for our library came from — and to suggest you take the time to wander through your own local bookshop. Who knows, you might even get to pet a cat!

Innkeeper’s Note: Some prefer tales of shining armour, but I favour this version of the Copper Crown’s story. Anyone who has hiked the Vedder knows true endurance comes from grit, not gold.

THE GIRL ON VEDDER PEAK

Copper is a sturdy name, though less grand than some. The Coppers’ tale began not with trumpets, but with a lost girl. Young Aveline Copper wandered onto Vedder Mountain and found a creature of sorrow: a dragon called Aerca, with patinated scales and a torn wing. Too proud to die, too wounded to fly.

THE HEARTFIRE BOND

Aveline (who possessed that troublesome virtue called pity) shared her bread and water with the dragon — weaving a bond between them.

Years passed. Aveline grew into something strange — a woman who spoke in rumbles and clicks and understood both growing things and the hunger of the sky.

Healed and whole, Aerca became her shadow, keeping wolves (and worse) at bay. Together they proved that true strength lies not in the sharpness of a blade, but in quiet understanding.

THE QUIET HEART OF THE COPPER CROWN

Legend says that those who cross the threshold of the Copper Crown, with its ever-warm floors, rest just above the sleeping dragon, Aerca.

Who knows? Perhaps you will be the one to wake her and write the next chapter of this wild, enduring legacy.

Jay polished off the painting of the second tower for the rear gate of the Hazelnut Inn over the last couple of days. To keep things as efficient as possible, we fabricated the feature in the shop, and we will use our forklift to transport it next door to the Inn. As soon as the piece is bolted to the footing, the crew will measure everything and then fabricate the metal gates to replace the temporary farm gate that has been hanging there since we began construction almost a decade ago.

You may not be surprised to learn I’m a bit of a bookworm — or that books can change how I see the world.

Take the sculpted roots winding around our Under Hill Suite. They make me think of another forest entirely: the ancient world of Naomi Novik’s Uprooted.

If you’re planning to lose yourself in a book during your stay, I can think of few better pairings.

Uprooted’s main character, Agnieszka, casts spells that are messy, instinctive things. Perfection is never the point, and the novel feels perfectly at home in the Under Hill. With hand-sculpted textures and earthen walls, the suite echoes the untamed forest at the heart of Novik’s story. The room and the novel share the qualities of something ancient and quietly alive.

For something shorter, I’d recommend Novik’s novella The Summer War, the story of a young witch caught between the magic of mortal and immortal realms.

Take your time. Read slowly.

Let the roots overhead and the forest on the page become part of the same world.

🧙‍♂️ HAPPY HOBBIT DAY! 🧙‍♂️

The trees on Vedder Mountain are turning golden and we’re finding every excuse to keep the teakettle on!

Today, we’re raising a cup in honour of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins' shared birthday.

Our affection for the Bagginses is woven right into our Under Hill Suite. Set into the earth and filled with stone and timber, it even features a garden with its own waterfall — a little homage to the enchanting world of J.R.R. Tolkien.

So, here’s to the ring-bearers and to the simple pleasures of a warm cup of tea.

Happy birthday, Bilbo and Frodo — and a very happy Hobbit Day to you all!
