Hazelnut Inn Canada’s Most Magical Hotel A Magical Hotel

08/29/2026

Each year during our slower summer season, we go through the shop and entire property to make an extensive list of what we can improve, repair or finish. The list is often quite long. One of this year’s items is a new sign for our gate. Guests on their way to the Hazelnut Inn often pull into our driveway, thinking they have arrived at the Inn. It creates confusion when the keypad doesn’t open the gate with the codes they have been given for the Hazelnut Inn. We’ve added a tiny sign above our keypad, but a second, larger notice on our gate seemed to be necessary as well. For those who missed our award-winning sign on the road, we’ve identified the Imagination Corporation one more time - just to be sure. But as we all know, it may not work, for very few people actually read signs. :)

The boys did their second day of sculpting on the Hazelnut Inn gate tower. Peter decided to go with brickwork from top to bottom rather than using a mix of large stones and bricks like on the second tower. They should be able to finish it tomorrow, making it ready for paint next week. Stay tuned…

A Cruiser’s Meditation on the Hazelnut Inn

The sea stays with you.
Even after the ship docks at Canada Place, something of the Pacific remains — the salt in the air, the rhythm of water against the hull, the memory of waking to another piece of Alaska.

Then the gangway comes down. The journey is officially over. But perhaps it doesn’t have to end there.

Eastward

Leave Vancouver behind and drive into the Fraser Valley. In Yarrow, just over an hour from the cruise terminal, the world becomes smaller.

This is where the Hazelnut Inn waits. With only three suites, it offers almost the opposite experience of a cruise ship. No crowds. No itinerary.

Instead, there are three distinct worlds.

The Under Hill Suite feels rooted in the earth, with curved doors, plaster, wood, and stone creating a dwelling imagined rather than engineered.

The Copper Crown Suite suggests a miniature castle — warm and theatrical — where the demands of the kingdom have been exchanged for a book beside the hearth.

The North Star Suite feels especially natural after a cruise. It recalls the private quarters of an old sailing vessel, but beyond the windows waits a garden.

A Different Kind of Luxury

On a ship, luxury comes through abundance: restaurants, entertainment, expansive decks, and an entire world built around you.

At the Hazelnut Inn, luxury comes through limitation.
Fewer rooms. Fewer people. Fewer demands on your attention.
No dinner seating to catch. No shore excursion to join. No announcement telling you what comes next.

You can simply stay where you are.
After a week of schedules and movement, two people in a private garden, listening to falling water as daylight disappears, can feel surprisingly luxurious.

The voyage may have ended at Canada Place. But returning to land doesn’t have to mean returning immediately to ordinary life.

Take the long way home.

While there are no major projects underway in the shop, there are plenty of small ones. One of these projects is a pair of little signs to mount on the Hazelnut Inn front gate. These new signs will welcome guests to the Inn and make it a little more clear this is the way to go.

A Royal Engagement: Proposing in the Copper Crown

If your partner carries themselves with a noble grace, an extraordinary proposal setting may be in order. Welcome to the ultimate guide for a majestic engagement inside the castle sanctuary of the Hazelnut Inn’s Copper Crown Suite.

🏰 Set the Scene

Step through the castle gates and leave the modern world behind. Draw the heavy curtains, pour a drink into ornate goblets, and unwind beneath the grand chandelier as two sovereigns escaping the demands of the court to focus entirely on each other.

👑 The Coronation Ritual

Bring along a delicate, filigree crown.

While your partner admires the stone arches, tapestries, and the moat, quietly retrieve the crown.
Step up, place it gently on their head, and tell them that while empires fade, they will always hold absolute dominion over your heart.

Speak from the soul and ask them to rule by your side forever. Within these stone walls, establish a private kingdom built to last a lifetime.

Step into the Copper Crown and begin your reign together. 🌹

Not Your Average Hole in the Ground!

Deep in BC’s Fraser Valley lies a hidden luxury sanctuary for adults: The Under Hill Suite at the Hazelnut Inn.

Inspired by the cozy subterranean charm of Middle-earth and the gentle whimsy of Beatrix Potter, this architectural masterpiece is built beneath the roots of an ancient tree. Step through a hand-crafted moon gate into a secret garden complete with a trickling waterfall, hand-painted walls, Tiffany lamps, a plush king-bed alcove, and a massive soaking tub for two.

📍 Nestled in Yarrow (Chilliwack), just 90 minutes from Vancouver and 15 minutes from the US border.

The Architecture of Ink & Stone

Some places are built; others are dreamed into existence. When we shaped the Hazelnut Inn, every trowel stroke met more than concrete — it met the edges of stories.

If you look closely at the North Star Suite’s hand-painted celestial ceiling and hidden corners, you’ll feel the influence of the fantasy worlds I’ve spent a lifetime exploring.

If you are packing something to read during your stay under our stars you might consider one of my favourite authors, Naomi Novik. Here are two books from her catalog filled with her fierce, deeply empathetic storytelling:

The Perfect Match: A Deadly Education

Our North Star Suite is a sanctuary — complete with a private garden, a deep soaker tub, and midnight velvet tones that mirror Novik’s dark, immersive world. But true comfort tastes better with a hint of peril.

A Deadly Education drops you into the Scholomance, a shifting, monster-filled school trying to devour its students. Reading it here creates a delicious friction: you can explore dark, dangerous corridors while safely tucked away from the modern world. It is the ultimate luxury — experiencing literary chaos inside a fairytale haven.

The Alternate Path: His Majesty's Dragon

If dark academia isn't your escape of choice, you might want to slide His Majesty’s Dragon into your satchel instead.

Trading claustrophobic danger for historical grandeur and the thrill of the open skies, this sweeping tale matches the deep ocean hues and celestial ceilings of the North Star Suite. Reading it here feels like charting a course across the stars from your own private captain’s quarters.

What would you like to read under the North Star?
