Fifty-two years and counting.

I’m often asked what it is like to be with someone for more than half a century. The question makes me smile, for I couldn’t imagine any other way. Janis’s & my goal, from the start, was to grow old together. We weren’t in a hurry to get old, but at our current pace, we may yet manage to accomplish that lofty goal.

I still vividly remember the excitement of the long-anticipated day we exchanged our vows in front of friends and family. We were young but intent on starting a life together. ‘For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, forsaking all others, until death us do part.’

Through the years, there have definitely been ups and downs, days when we struggled and days when we laughed. There’s been some sickness and plenty of good health. While our love for each other is constant, there are occasional days when we don’t like each other. Thinking back to our wedding vows, it has been pretty much what we bargained for and promised each other so long ago. It has certainly been a wonderful and magical shared adventure.

Janis and I had much to learn to live together, be parents, (and eventually grandparents), build houses, businesses and a thousand other adventures. While seldom in total agreement at the start of any venture, we learned to talk things through, agree and then totally support each other as we worked towards our ambitious goals. There have never been ‘I told you so’s’ when things went awry, which they did on occasion. Those were times we supported each other, picked ourselves up and started over. The hard times were more than balanced by the great times and the constant love we have enjoyed together.

After fifty-two years and counting, love is still an awesome thing. It is felt with a smile, a hug or a gentle kiss as we pass in the hall. We still like to cuddle on the couch and spend quiet time together. That’s the ‘to love and cherish’ part - our most favourite.

Staying at the Hazelnut Inn is a remarkable experience for our guests and not simply a place to lay one’s head. We work hard to ensure every detail is attended to, and the story driven ambiance both inside and out makes things memorable. Each suite’s fridge is stocked, snacks are at the ready, locally made chocolates are laid out by the pillows. A luxurious bathrobe/cape is hanging by the soaker tub. There is even a carefully measured jar of fish food to feed the koi fish in the pond. And each guest gets to take home a limited edition print themed to the suite they are staying in as a keepsake. The prints are limited to an edition size of only 150 prints which means it was time for me to sign and number the next artwork the guests of the Under Hill will receive.

Deep in the emerald hollow of the Fraser Valley, some homes aren’t built upon the earth—they are breathed into it.

If you crave the scent of sun-warmed yarrow and the profound quiet of the ground beneath your feet, your path will inevitably lead you to the Under Hill.

This is the home of old Mr. Burrows, a soul so deeply attuned to the subterranean pulse of the land that he shares a heartbeat with the rabbit-folk. Above his weathered fir door, a thousand rainy seasons have washed over an inscription that translates to exactly what this place provides: A Sanctuary Of Heart’s Ease.

Step across the threshold and you’re instantly wrapped in a dream of amber light, lace doilies, and patchwork quilts. Even the floorboards radiate a rare warmth that slows time down to the pace of a germinating seed.

Mr. Burrows has suddenly departed for the far horizon, following a clairvoyant whim toward whatever the stars have promised him. But before he left, he handed over the keys.

The Under Hill is open. You are invited to leave your weariness at the door and rest in these subterranean chambers. The hearth is warm, and a kindred soul is always welcome.
