Effective at 12 PM (noon) on Friday, May 15, campfires will be permitted across the Coastal Fire Centre and at Vedder River Campground.

Current and forecast conditions have shifted since the Coastal Fire Centre initially implemented the Category 1 campfire prohibition earlier this May, resulting in cooler temperatures, improved humidity values and an overall reduction in wildfire hazard throughout the region. Because of this, Category 1 campfires will be once again permitted under the Coastal Fire Centre’s jurisdiction as of Friday, May 15, 2026, at 12 p.m. (noon).

Although the fire risk has decreased for the region, human-caused wildfires are still possible and entirely preventable. Please take the time to learn how to enjoy a campfire safely: gov.bc.ca/saferburning

Category 2 and 3 open burning and select activities and equipment remain prohibited throughout the Coastal Fire Centre. For full details, please refer to the following information bulletin: https://blog.gov.bc.ca/bcwildfire/campfires-permitted-across-coastal-fire-centre-due-to-decreased-fire-risk/

Thanks to recent rain and cooler, fall-like conditions, we will be rescinding most open burning prohibitions within the Coastal Fire Centre later this week.

The Category 1 (campfire) and Category 2 prohibitions in the Coastal Fire Centre's jurisdiction will be lifted in all areas effective at 12 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time (PDT), on Thursday, September 25, 2025. In addition, the Category 3 prohibition will be rescinded in the North Island Centre Coast Forest District and the Haida Gwaii Forest District at the same time and date. Category 3 prohibitions will remain in effect for the rest of the fire centre until October 31 or until the order is rescinded.

Information on the different categories of open burning is available online: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/wildfire-status/prevention/fire-bans-and-restrictions/open-burning

Before lighting any fire, check in with your local authority, and abide by any bylaws or restrictions in place. We also ask the public to continue to use caution with the use of any open fire and to know your responsibilities before you burn.

A map of the upcoming changes is available here: https://blog.gov.bc.ca/bcwildfire/campfire-and-backyard-burning-prohibitions-to-be-rescinded-in-coastal-fire-centre/

Thank you to The Book Man for supplying books to start a little free library at the Vedder River Campground! Our campers are very much enjoying them. Thank you!

When the Vedder River Campground approached us to ask if we could supply them with a selection of books for their Little Free Library, we said an enthusiastic yes!

Accessible books is something that we truly believe in. Books here, books there, books absolutely everywhere!

We love the idea of all of the campers being able to choose a book or three to read on their holidays, or take home with them to enjoy there.

Know that anytime we cannot take books from you for trading credit that we're working hard to find great homes for them, in meaningful spaces and unexpected places.

Grateful to them for giving us such positive feedback and even sending us a photo of their library 'in action'.

Effective at 12 p.m. (noon) PDT on Thursday, July 17, Category 1 open fires (campfires) will be prohibited across the Coastal Fire Centre, excluding the Haida Gwaii Forest District and the portion of the Central Regional District that falls within the North Island Central Coast Forest District.

This prohibition will remain in place until 12 p.m. (noon) PDT on Oct. 30, 2025, or until the order is rescinded.

Prohibitions apply to all public and private lands unless otherwise specified. In addition to prohibiting the use of open fires of any size, the following activities are prohibited in most areas:
• Fireworks; as defined in the Fireworks Act;
• Binary Exploding Targets;
• Sky Lanterns
• Wood fired hot tubs, wood fired pizza ovens and other wood fired devices unless vented through a structure that has a flue and is incorporated in a building;
• Burn Barrels or Burn Cages of any size or description;
• Controlled air incinerators
• Air curtain burners; and
• Carbonizers.

This prohibition does not ban the use of cooking stoves with a CSA or ULC rating that use gas, propane or briquettes.

Prohibitions for Category 2 and 3 open fires are also in place for the Coastal Fire Centre, with the exception of the Haida Gwaii Forest District.
