All good things must come to an end. We’re embarking on new adventures and so April will be our last month of operation. We have been blessed by many helping hands over our years of operation, holding onto Superhost status from the moment we qualified. Thank you to everyone who has supported us along the way!

We have a lot of guests that come to ski as we’re a short drive away. After you’ve played in the snow, it’s a quick drive back to Bub’s Place and an even quicker drive to many of Corner Brook’s great restaurants.

Something that might catch your eye in Corner Brook is the large pulp and paper mill by the water. Established in 1925 by The Reid Newfoundland Company, the mill turned 100 years old this year. Now owned by Kruger Inc., it remains a main employer in the area.
🏭
The mill spurred the construction of a number of local sites, including the Glynmill Inn, and many houses in the townsite area of Corner Brook.
⚓️
Bub’s Place also has a connection to the mill as both Ron Whyte, Bub’s step-father, and Rex White, Bub’s step-brother, worked at the mill for years.
📣
Corner Brook’s mill whistle still blows to this day, though not as frequently as it isn’t depended on to indicate shift changes like it once was. For many residents in Corner Brook, the sound of the mill whistle is part of the heritage of Corner Brook.

One of the things we have always enjoyed having at Bub’s Place is the tea biscuits that Jean used to make in years gone by. They are a much loved family tradition and we love sharing the recipe with our guests. If you’re staying at Bub’s Place and want to give it a go, the recipe is framed in our well-stocked kitchen. Here’s a recent batch baked up by Bub’s sister during a visit home to Corner Brook.

We love adding interesting pieces to Bub’s Place and many of them have their own stories to tell. From art made by family and friends to pieces picked up on our own travels, we love sharing them with our guests.

Bub’s Place isn’t just an it is also our home in Corner Brook. The house was designed by Jean Buffett Mercer Whyte, who was first married to George Mercer (one of the first principals in Corner Brook) and then, after George’s passing, to Ron Whyte, who worked at the mill. Jean, herself, was a teacher in Corner Brook.
⚓️
After Jean’s passing in 1998, the house was passed to her son, Keith Mercer, who was affectionately known as Bub. It was a quick walk to the old hospital where Keith worked!
⚓️
When Bub (Keith) passed a few years back, the house passed to his sister, who, with other family members, maintains it as a second home and a place to welcome visitors to the area.
⚓️
Bub’s Place has been in our family for close to 75 years and we enjoy sharing this beautiful part of the world with others.
