Tomorrow is the Whaletown Christmas Bazaar. Helen and I will be there for FOCI. We have locally designed Christmas cards and greeting cards as well as calendars displaying lovely renditions of local flora. And, drum roll, gluten free cookies, squares and vegan chocolate truffles. My husband can't believe these treats are actually leaving home. Everything you purchase at our table goes toward keeping Cortes wild and beautiful but it isn't easy, so please be generous.

What a sting ray migration looks like, wow!

Thoroughly enjoyed the coffee house at Hollyhock. Here is a fine sample of the music featured that night. You can find it on YouTube, titled "What a Man Can Be" - Solaris.

The garden is so beautiful with its Fall golds, greys, greens, and purples. Ive been turfing the crocosmia bulbs that have cemented themselves so thickly that I have to use a crow bar to separate them. They are so overcrowded they no longer flower. Hoping to replace them with tulips which I will have to cover with wire mesh to prevent the squirrels feasting on them.

The squirrels have been particularly industrious this season. They have been assiduously day- lighting the pine tree that shades my kitchen door. They also like to prune my lillies in case they might be by later for a colorful snack. That I had an tulips this spring was a total oversight on their part as the bulbs served to get them through the rough winter without too much work. Plums, cherries, raspberries and strawberries have all fallen by the wayside as well. We have the fattest squirrels for miles.

We recently celebrated Cortes Days at Smelt Bay Park. Thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who helped with the very successful salad bar for the benefit of FOCI. This year we are focusing on the health of the lakes and how we can keep them beautiful and clean. Find out more about it at the Friends of Cortes Island website and become a member.
Now I need to focus on the home front. As you know if you have been here, I'm an avid gardener but I live on a rock. So every year I need to add more dirt to my plantings because they are growing out of their original space. Problem is, every year they need more than the last. Oddly enough, I have a volunteer apple tree that is growing right out of a rock!

Still have very warm days as summer nears the end. It has been a busy season. Looking forward to some down time after the garden is all in.

So busy with the harvest and saying goodbye to parting friends that I've had no time to tidy the cottage after the last guests. My apologies to those I had to turn away. A reservation gives me the "heads up".
