Lake trout offer a true winter challenge and are a favourite for anglers looking for an active, hands-on ice fishing experience!

Across northern Manitoba - including bodies of water such as Clearwater Lake, Reed Lake, Lake Athapapuskow, Kississing, and Second Cranberry Lake - anglers target lake trout in deep, cold water where these fish roam in large areas and follow forage throughout the winter season.

For success through the ice, combining aggressive jigging with smart structure targeting is key. Deep troughs, steep breaks, and areas near inflows often hold fish. Mixing tube jigs, spoons, and rattle baits while watching your sonar for suspended trout can help trigger bites.

Many anglers also run a second line with a set bait (such as cisco or tullibee) or use bait-tipped presentations near bottom to entice less aggressive fish.

Because of the depth, location, and safety considerations involved in targeting lake trout, many anglers choose to fish with experienced guides who know the lake well and can help maximize success while keeping safety top of mind!
