WOODS RESTRICTIONS LIFTED IN PARTS OF NOVA SCOTIA, BURN BAN STILL IN EFFECT PROVINCEWIDE
The risk of wildfires has eased in several areas of Nova Scotia, prompting the province to lift woods restrictions in certain counties as of 4 p.m. today, August 29. However, the provincewide burn ban remains in place until October 15 or until conditions improve further.
Woods restrictions have been lifted in Cape Breton, Richmond, Victoria, Inverness, Guysborough, Antigonish, and Halifax counties.
Premier Tim Houston said the decision was made after fire officials reviewed updated data. โOur data shows conditions are heading in the right direction in certain parts of the province, enough for the professionals to recommend lifting the woods restrictions in those areas,โ he said. Houston noted that while crews continue to battle the fire in Long Lake, public caution has helped keep wildfire activity low elsewhere.
Other parts of the province remain under restrictions due to extremely dry and hazardous conditions. These include Pictou, Colchester, Cumberland, Hants, Lunenburg, Kings, Annapolis, Queens, Shelburne, Digby, and Yarmouth counties. The restrictions in these 11 counties will stay in place until October 15 or until conditions allow for them to be lifted.
The fine for violating the restrictions is $25,000.
