🦖 Happy 35th Unearthing Anniversary, Sue! 🎉

On August 12, 1990, a lucky flat tire led fossil hunter Sue Hendrickson to one of the most remarkable paleontological discoveries in history—Sue the T. rex, the most complete and best-preserved Tyrannosaurus rex fossil ever found.

Today, we celebrate 35 years since Sue was unearthed in the South Dakota Badlands—a discovery that completely transformed our understanding of this legendary predator.

Some dino-mite facts about Sue:

🦴 Over 90% complete, with around 250 bones recovered

🎂 Lived to be about 33 years old—a long life for a T. rex

🏛️ Has been the star of the Field Museum in Chicago since 2000, with a dazzling new exhibit unveiled in 2018

From prehistoric beast to modern museum icon, Sue continues to awe and inspire generations of dinosaur lovers. Here’s to 35 years of scientific discovery, museum stardom, and T. rex-sized wonder! 🦕

Preserved blood vessel structures have been found in one of Scotty's ribs. When PhD physics student at the University of Regina Jerit Mitchell first spotted these odd structures inside a scan of Scotty’s rib bone in 2018, he nearly dismissed it.

“I remember showing my supervisors, Dr. Barbi and Dr. McKellar, a strange structure inside a scan of the rib that I originally didn’t give much thought to. They were quick to point out that what I discovered could be preserved blood vessels, which has since led to a much more expansive research project,” says Mitchell.

Synchrotron light produced by the Canadian Light Source at the University of Saskatchewan allowed for a detailed 3D model of both the bone and structures inside it without damaging the 66-million-year-old fossil.

This research helps us compare how injuries healed in extinct animals, like dinosaurs, with living species, such as birds and reptiles, and understand the biology of the past.

You can see a replica of the rib section Jerit and his team scanned and studied at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum.
