Eric and I are SO excited to see The Ayrshire Collection featured in the latest issue of Hotelier Magazine, as part of a look at the independent boutique hotels shaping a different kind of hospitality in Canada - one rooted in personality, thoughtful design, a strong sense of place and experiences that simply can’t be standardized.

When we began restoring our little corner of Elora, we wanted to create places with character. Places with stories. Places that felt distinctly connected to this village we love.

A few years (and a few buildings!) later, that idea continues to shape everything we’re creating, from The Ayrshire House to The Ayrshire Hotel and now The Ayrshire Laigh.

Thoughtfully designed with warmth and comfort in mind, the Laigh features four inviting bedrooms, expansive living spaces, and historic timbers that lend a sense of character and craftsmanship throughout.

Beyond its doors, a private Scottish-inspired spa retreat awaits, complete with your own hydropool hot tub and traditional cedar sauna tucked away for quiet moments of rest and relaxation.

This has been one of the most exciting chapters in our story, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to finally share it with you.

The best way to cool off in Elora? Let the river lead the way. 💦

Whether you’re looking for adventure or simply a quiet afternoon on the water, here are three of our favourite ways to experience the Grand River:

🛶 PADDLE
From peaceful morning paddles to exploring hidden pools and gentle eddies, the Grand River and Irvine Creek offer something for every skill level, from first-time paddleboarders to experienced kayakers.

One of our favourite launch spots is Bissell Park, just across the road from The Ayrshire Laigh. The calm stretch between Bissell Falls and the Jack R. MacDonald Pedestrian Bridge is perfect for an easy paddle and a refreshing dip.

🌊TUBE
Few things say summer in Elora quite like drifting down the river between the towering limestone cliffs of the Gorge! With two popular routes, Elora has both thrill-seekers and river-loungers covered!

For a leisurely float, launch at Blair Street in Fergus and finish at the Trestle Bridge. Feeling ambitious? Continue all the way to Bissell Park in Elora; but bring a paddle, as the current slows considerably beyond the bridge.

If you’re after a little more excitement, grab a wristband for the Elora Gorge tubing experience and let the rapids do the work. It’s one of Elora’s signature summer adventures for good reason!

🎣 FISH
The Grand River is renowned for its trophy brown trout, drawing fly anglers from across Ontario. For those who prefer a spinning rod, the Grand is also home to healthy populations of smallmouth bass and carp, making for excellent warm-water fishing throughout the summer.

Even if casting a line isn’t on your agenda, the river offers plenty of fun for families. Grab a net and explore the shoreline, where children can spend hours discovering crayfish, minnows, and other tiny creatures hiding beneath the rocks.
