If you are new to paddling taking a basic canoe course with Orcka is a great idea! Paddling strokes and canoe rescue are really important skills to have if you plan to start canoe tripping.
Upcoming courses at Toronto Island Canoe Club ORCKA Basic Canoeing 1-2 is an 8-hour course designed for beginner and intermediate level paddlers who are looking to expand their paddling skills, knowledge and safety.
There are no prerequisites for this course; participants must be comfortable swimming in deep water.
You will be learning the following in both the bow and stern positions: Launching and removing canoes; entering and exiting canoes; paddling positions, balancing and trimming; changing positions; pivots; sideways displacement; forward and reverse straight line; inside and outside turns; circles; inside and outside landings; stopping; lifts and carries. In order to be able to do this, you will perfect paddling strokes, including forward, reverse, sweep, pry, draw, j-stroke, stern pry and draw.
A requirement of the course is to participate in a Canoe over Canoe Rescue, both as victim and rescuer.
This course is a prerequisite for Basic Canoeing Tandem Level 3.
Don’t have a partner for this tandem course? No worries, we will match you with another participant.
