If you're in the park this weekend, have a peek at the sun, the the moon and Saturn!

Join the Ontario Science Centre and Algonquin Park this Friday and Saturday for Northern Lights and Celestial Sights! Program details below:

Friday, September 26th @ 7:30pm
Northern Lights and Celestial Sights - Ontario Science Centre - We’ll be looking up, using telescopes and the naked eye, to spot the Moon, Saturn and, if we’re lucky, the northern lights! 7:30pm – 9:30pm. Algonquin Visitor Centre (at km 43). Rain date for evening: Saturday, September 27th (same time and place).

Saturday, September 27th @ 10:00am
Northern Lights and Celestial Sights - Ontario Science Centre - Stop by during the day on Saturday to see the Sun through a telescope* and learn more about the northern lights, which are expected to be at a peak this fall. Explore the science behind the stunning phenomena by making your own aurora art, learning how excited gases emit colourful light and more. 10:00am – 3:00pm. Algonquin Visitor Centre (at km 43). *Observations are weather permitting

I was just outside to see if the northern lights were visible. Not with the naked eye but my camera picked up some pretty hues above the gazebo, and the stars of the Big Dipper, too!

Calling all star-gazers! Take a tour of the night sky guided by skilled astronomers (telescopes provided) along with other fun activities. The Almaguin Summer Star Party is happening at two locations over two nights Aug 11 & 12 -- during the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. Tickets are just $10/night.
We have rooms available those dates and we have dark skies so you can keep the gazing going back here at the inn. Late breakfast is available the next morning for you night-owls!

This August the stars will come out to play in the Almaguin Highlands with a two-night special event. Look to the heavens with the help of skilled astronomers to see far away galaxies, shooting stars and the planets and wonders of our solar system.

Jim wanted to get back into the lake as he preps for another triathlon so we spent the afternoon at Arrowhead Park. FYI the water is still way too cold for the rest of us!
Followed the swim with a trail run around the lake and, wow, the trilliums are in full bloom and everywhere!

If you saw my snowshoeing posts last week, you know there’s still a good base of snow slowly melting back in the forest. That’s typical in April. This fresh half-foot of snow that fell last night is definitely not what we expect at this time of year! (Sure is pretty, tho!)

I was out snowshoeing yesterday (yes, on April 2nd!) and discovered signs of some very busy beavers. Seems they’re building a new dam and starting to create a new pond!
