Did You Know?

The fire lookout on top of the Hunters Range has been up there in some form since 1925. The building standing today went up in 1950, the Forest Service used it until 1998, and it was restored in 2012.

It sits near Morton Peak at 2,245 m - one of the few ultra-prominent peaks in BC's interior plateau - and from the top you can see Mabel, Shuswap and Morton Lakes at once.

9.4 km one way, about two and a half hours up, rated More Difficult. It follows the original pack trail the lookout crews used.

Worth knowing before you go: it's an active logging road, it's active grizzly habitat, and there's route-finding required above the 4x4 post.

What to pack for a week at Mabel in late September?

1. 20°C afternoons, 4°C mornings. One warm jacket you'd actually wear.
2. Swim gear anyway - the water holds its heat longer than you'd think, and the sauna plunge is the whole point.
3. Proper Boots - the trails stay damp under the canopy this time of year.
4. Headlamp - dark by around 7:45 pm and getting earlier every day.
5. Fishing Licence + Conservation Surcharge Stamp if you're chasing trout.
7. Firewood and groceries - stock up in Enderby on the way in

Beautiful late season evening at Mabel Lake Resort & Marina

With some nice weather still on the way, project low 20s, take advantage of some vacancy in the cabins and rv park. Only 2 weekends left before we close for the season.

New for the rest of the season: the sauna's on us.

Book two nights or more in a cabin from today through to the end of the season, and a one-hour session in the floating sauna for two is included.

Bringing more than two? Extra spots in the same session are $25 a person.

Cold lake, hot cedar, and nobody else on the water. September is the best time of year for it - 14C in, 80C out, and the steam sits on the water in the mornings.

Cabins are open now through the 30th.
