What’s an old creepy basement without an old creepy boiler? 👻
This century-old boiler once sat right in the centre of the basement, working hard to heat the entire hotel and supply hot water throughout the building. Fueled by coal, it would have pushed steam through the hotel's web of pipes and warmed the rooms long before modern systems took over. Can you imagine how many bitter winters it kept at bay?
We knew from the start that this piece of history deserved to be preserved. But before the basement could be properly cleaned, repaired, and stabilized, the boiler had to come out, and that was no small task. It had to be carefully cut into sections and hauled out piece by piece. We saved the parts that were still in good condition, and plan to incorporate them back into the hotel.
While work has moved upstairs for now, that hasn't stopped us from dreaming up plans for the basement. We hope to have a beautiful brick wall that will showcase the old boiler cover and celebrate this hardworking piece of the building’s past.
So what do you think about this old workhorse? Would you display it differently? 👀
