May 23rd and 24th at Page's Resort are dedicated to honouring the history and legacy of Japanese Canadians on Gabriola Island, with a focus on the Koyama and Shinde families who lived right here in Silva Bay, and their contributions to Gabriola’s culture and economic history.
Join the Gabriola Museum at Pages Inn on Silva Bay on May 23rd at 2:30pm, in the grand unveiling of a 4 part exhibit, Omoide: Memories, Recollections and Reminiscences,
In addition to the new permanent exhibition at the Museum, the story of Nikkei (anyone with one or more ancestors from Japan) on Gabriola continues on location at Silva Bay, shared through the project’s two monuments to the Koyama and Shinde families, inspired by Shinto torii gates and an interactive mobile exhibit, Gaman, meaning resilience and endurance, that showcases Gabriola artists influenced by Japanese culture. Descendants of the original families will be here sharing their family stories.
Please register if you are able to come! https://gabriolamuseum.org/events/exhibit-grand-opening-omoide-memories-recollections-and-reminiscences/
Then at 2pm on May 24th Masako Fukawa will be launching her new book Stories Of Nikkei Canadians: Resilience in Struggle. In this collection of photos and stories, Masako brings to vivid voice the lives of Japanese Canadians, including her grandfather Yoshimatsu Shinde and his brother, who created a sawmill in the northwest end of Silva Bay. (The book is for sale at our Li'l Market Store at Page's Resort.)
