And what does this mean for The Marmalade Motel? Quite a lot, actually. 🤍
Today we shared some big news from our café — toward the end of this year, that chapter of Marmalade will come to a close.
But here at the motel, we’re getting ready for the next one.
When Neil and I opened The Marmalade Motel six years ago, we had absolutely no idea where this adventure would take us. What we did know was that we loved this little piece of coastline, we loved creating beautiful spaces for people to escape to, and we believed there was something pretty special about welcoming people to the Eastern Shore.
Six years later, we believe that more than ever.
Our decision to close the café allows us to bring our time, creativity and investment back here — to the motel, to tourism, and to creating even more reasons for people to discover this incredible part of Nova Scotia.
That also means taking a fresh look at how food and beverage fits into the Marmalade Motel experience — and imagining what we might do a little differently in the future.
There are things we’ve wanted to do here for years.
Ideas we’ve been quietly dreaming about.
Experiences we want to create.
Spaces we want to make even better.
And now we’re giving ourselves the room to do them.
So, no — The Marmalade Motel isn’t going anywhere.
We’re just getting very clear about where we’re going next.
And we think this next chapter is going to be a really beautiful one.

There are a few rumours making their way around town, so we thought it was probably time you heard this directly from us. 🤍
Yes, The Marmalade Café & Coffee Bar will be closing toward the end of this year.
We haven’t set a final closing date yet, and when we do, we’ll make sure you hear it directly from us.
It’s a big decision and one Neil and I have spent a great deal of time thinking about.
Over the past six years, Marmalade has grown and changed in ways we never could have completely predicted when we first opened the doors of our little seaside motel.
What began with nine rooms on the Eastern Shore has grown into something much bigger: vacation properties, experiences, events, partnerships and new opportunities to welcome people to this incredible part of Nova Scotia.
And we’ve reached a point where we need to make some choices about where we put our time, energy and investment next.
For us, that means returning our focus to where Marmalade began: tourism, hospitality and The Marmalade Motel.
We see enormous opportunity to continue growing the motel, creating new reasons for people to visit the Eastern Shore, developing thoughtful guest experiences and building the next chapter of Marmalade around the place and industry we fell in love with in the first place.
So while one chapter is coming to an end, The Marmalade Motel is absolutely not closing.
Quite the opposite.
We’re refocusing.
We’re investing.
We’re growing.
And we’re incredibly excited about what comes next.
For now, nothing changes at the café. Our team is here. The coffee is brewing. The kitchen is cooking. And there is still plenty of time to come through those doors and enjoy this little place with us.
We’ll continue operating through to the end of this year and will share our final closing date once it has been decided.
We are enormously proud of what we created at The Marmalade Café and of the people who helped us create it.
Closing its doors will undoubtedly be bittersweet.
But after six years of building businesses, we’ve learned that growth isn’t always about doing more.
Sometimes it’s about getting very clear about what you want to build next — and having the courage to put your energy there.
For Neil and me, that next chapter begins back where Marmalade started.
