At 4:30 a.m., in the middle of a dark forest, quitting would have been easier than taking another step.

But I kept moving.

The forest was quiet. My legs were tired. There were still hours to go.

Eventually, the sun came up.

Then came the final lap, the finish line and the sound of everyone cheering.

Four months ago, I didn’t know if I could do this.

Now I know.

And that’s probably the biggest thing I’ll take from this experience.

You don’t always need to know exactly how you’re going to get there.

Sometimes, you just need to make the decision to begin — and then keep moving.

Four months ago, this was just a thought.

Now I’m standing on the start line of my first ultra marathon.

The training is done. The preparation is done. Now there’s only one thing left to do — move.

This is the start, the first lap, and the beginning of a very long day.
