FIRE PREVENTION WEEK: Is Your Home Fire-Ready?
October 4–10 is Fire Prevention Week, making it the perfect time to take a few minutes to check the fire safety equipment in your home.
A few simple steps can make a big difference:
🚨 Check your smoke alarms
Test your smoke alarms regularly and replace the batteries when needed. If a smoke alarm is 10 years old or older, it’s time to replace it.
☁️ Install carbon monoxide (CO) alarms
Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas that can be dangerous. Make sure your home has working CO alarms in the appropriate locations.
🧯 Check your fire extinguishers
Make sure your extinguisher is accessible, in good condition, and appropriate for the potential hazards in your home.
🪜 Have an escape plan and a way out
Make sure everyone in your household knows two ways out of each sleeping area and consider an emergency escape ladder for bedrooms located above the ground floor.
🔥 Keep a fire blanket handy
A fire blanket can provide an additional tool for dealing with certain small fires, particularly in the kitchen.
