About Sarah:
For Sarah Garaux Ashtanga yoga was not a romantic love at first sight story that is so often talked about in the yoga world. On the contrary, there was very little love initially, but a strong underlying sense that this was very important and required deeper exploration before walking away. This intuition is what kept her getting on the mat day in and day out for those first few years. She found that the ritual of the early mornings, noble silence, mindful movements, a clean diet, self study and early bedtimes to be the exact formula needed to bring balance to her stressful and chaotic days as a high school English teacher.
Before yoga, Sarah was quite enthusiastic about the outdoors and fitness and had many adventures all over the US. This fun lifestyle also came with tight hips and knee issues. These obstacles can make Ashtanga even more challenging and also quite discouraging. She was forced to move slowly each day, to focus on her breath, to learn more about the hips and knees, and to work on extinguishing negative self talk. These obstacles were, in hindsight, the source of her most important lessons, and the things that have most shaped her teaching style.
Today, Sarah lives with her husband Marque and their Indian street dog Chai in northeast Ohio. She still teaches high school English, keeps a 6 day per week practice, and helps to maintain an 8 acre property complete with a yoga shala and a few rentals.
