⚠️🚗Slow down for wildlife! 🐢🐍
With thousands of people visiting Point Pelee National Park by car each year, this unfortunately can lead to collisions with wildlife.
So what does that mean for a slow-moving Toonie-sized species at risk turtle just trying to cross the Main Road to get to the marsh? It means that Parks Canada needs visitors to slow down.

Learn more about how we’re making the main park road safer for wildlife (and people!): http://ow.ly/eISk50JsXym

Yes, it’s that time of year at Point Pelee – Stable Fly season. This species loves to feast on people, mainly from the knees down and during the late summer and fall, they can be numerous in the park. Here are some helpful pointers to make your fall visit bite free.

1. Wear long pants and close toed shoes. Our fall weather is often mild and we are tempted to keep wearing shorts. We suggest you bring a pair of pants and closed toed shoes in case it’s a bad fly day – it’s the best defense again a bite!
2. Check the weather conditions. Stable flies breed on dead vegetation in the agricultural fields north of the park. On the right wind, just like Monarchs and birds, they are blown into the park and funneled to the Tip. If you see N or NE in the weather forecast, there will likely be flies in the park that day.
3. Stick to the Marsh Boardwalk. If you’ve arrived on a bad fly day, you should find some relief on the Marsh Boardwalk. On days when the flies are bad at the Tip, you are almost guaranteed a fly free experience at the marsh.
4. Don’t rely on bug repellents. Unlike mosquitoes, Stable Flies hunt by sight. Most bug repellents masks your scent, which is why they work for things like mosquitoes. Visual hunters don’t care what you smell like, so save the spray for the mosquitoes and other species.
