We are excited to finally open for the season. It will be a slow opening first with extended hours and a more elaborate menu as the season progresses. Thank you for your support!

After three years of rebuilding following the devastating fire that destroyed their beloved restaurant, Gisela Conrad and Chef Yves Rossi are preparing to welcome guests back this June with the reopening of Boccalino restaurant La terrazza.

The slow opening date is set for June 12, initially operating from

3-8 pm (Friday to Monday), with extended summer hours and more elaborate menu as the season progresses. The adjacent boutique motel continues to operate year-round.

La terrazza brings a fresh new vision while staying true to the modern European hospitality and cuisine that locals and travellers have long appreciated. “It’s mainly outside, and that’s why we called it La terrazza,” says Conrad. “The definition is an Italian term meaning terrace, balcony or patio, referring to an open area connected to a building and often used for outdoor socializing, dining or relaxing.”

The new restaurant will offer a smaller, more intimate setting with seating for fewer than 50 guests, centred around a covered outdoor patio and newly custom-built kitchen.

While the format has evolved, the philosophy remains the same. Conrad and Rossi will continue focusing on sustainable, local and seasonal ingredients, with “everything homemade and made from scratch.” Guests can expect a menu that balances casual European-inspired fare with fine dining touches, along with homemade desserts, local beers, nearly all-local wines and handcrafted cocktails.

The pair are also exploring a street-food component aimed at ferry travellers and visitors on the go, offering high-quality, accessible options while maintaining the elevated culinary standards for which they are known.

Conrad says downsizing has allowed them to create something more manageable and personal. “It will be mainly the two of us doing it, which is kind of nice to downsize a little.”

Beyond the reopening itself, Conrad emphasizes the importance of collaboration within the local tourism and hospitality community. “Tourism means promoting everybody,” she says. “The more we have to offer our visitors and guests, the better their experience will be. When local businesses support one another, it creates a stronger destination and encourages people to stay longer, explore more and return again.”

With the return of La terrazza, the region will gain not only another dining destination, but also a renewed example of community spirit, resilience and passion for hospitality.

From Megan's son, Byron: "Celebration of Life for my Mom. Please share to anyone you think may be interested in attending. Ferries will be busy so please plan ahead and contact me if you have any questions or concerns. There is an 8:10am ferry and a 9:50am (Both Pacific Time) ferry from the Balfour side. I will be trying to set up a shuttle from the ferry landing to the Crawford Bay school to encourage people to walk on to the ferry.
Wear red and or black, If there's one thing my mom would have wanted it would be a ladybug themed Celebration of Life."

We are saddened beyond words by the news of Megan’s sudden passing and are still in shock and disbelief about it. Megan was our dear friend and business colleague, a great neighbour, deeply engaged community member and so much more. Yves, Gisela and the Boccalino family will miss her wholeheartedly. 🐞

It is with such deep sadness to hear the sudden passing of our Chamber president Megan Rokeby-Thomas on January 6th. We are completely heartbroken. We send out love and our blessings to her family, friends and the whole East Shore community.

Megan was an extraordinary person exuding the qualities of cooperation, kindness, care, compassion, joy and fun, leadership, determination and a sense of community that was beyond compare. She led the charge on the issues facing the East Shore and gave us the example of how a leader should be — strength with fairness and always putting people first.

She was so excited for this upcoming year for the Chamber, she envisioned many more events (which she loved), getting people together, helping businesses and making bodies accountable for good service to the shore. We were all more than ready to follow her excitement.

I think like many of you, we are all in shock and feel a penetrating sadness that comes when such a divine figure leaves this earthly plane. She leaves a beautiful family and legacy and the Light that she was will live on, under every ladybug's wing.

We love you Megan, fly high beautiful soul.❤️

“Located smack-dab in the middle of the East and West Kootenay regions, the Creston area is the ultimate base camp to launch day trip adventures to neighbouring communities. One of the most popular is the drive along Kootenay Lake’s East Shore — “the lake road”, as many locals refer to it — a trip that leads to your choice of beautiful beaches and a string of quaint communities full of quirky history, eclectic artisans and great views along the way. It’s always been one of my favourite things to do during the early spring, on a sunny summer day or even a lazy fall afternoon!”
