Strawberry season is almost on.

Not the pale supermarket kind. The real ones. Sun-warm, picked that minute, red the whole way through.

Campbellton Berry Farm, a short drive from town, opens its u-pick rows when the berries ripen, usually early July. Stained fingers. Baskets that somehow aren't full by the time you reach the car. Kids loose in the rows.

Bring a bigger container than you think you need. This is what July tastes like around here.

Eighty years ago, Lewisporte decided to run itself.

The community had been here since the 1800s, fishing, milling, growing up around the railway and the harbour. But it wasn't until 1946 that it officially became a town, with a council, a say, and its name on the books. Eight decades later, it's still a place small enough that the people making the decisions are the same ones you'll see at the rink and the grocery store.

That's the deal in a town this size. You don't just live here. You help run the place.
