THE FLIGHT THAT LEFT NEWFOUNDLAND BUT NEVER REALLY WENT HOME ‼️
When Delta Flight 15 finally climbed out of Gander in September 2001, the passengers were supposed to continue on to Atlanta and get back to their lives.
Instead, they began passing a sheet of paper around the cabin.
The flight from Frankfurt had been diverted after the attacks on the World Trade Center. Its passengers eventually found themselves in Lewisporte, where complete strangers handed over bedding, clothing, meals, medication and anything else they needed. When the visitors tried to pay, the answer was no. The people helping them never viewed it as anything extraordinary. Somebody was in trouble, so they helped.
One passenger, an Ohio woman named Shirley Brooks-Jones, could not accept that the story would simply end with everyone going home. Once Flight 15 was back in the air, she suggested creating a scholarship for students in the community that had cared for them.
Pledge sheets began moving through the plane. By the time it landed, roughly $15,000 had been promised. The following year, 14 graduating students from Lewisporte Collegiate received the first scholarships.
That collection aboard an airplane became the Lewisporte Area Flight 15 Scholarship Fund. It eventually grew beyond $1 million and has helped hundreds of Newfoundland students continue their education. The fund still exists today.
Most people know what Gander and the surrounding communities did during those terrible days. Far fewer know that the kindness kept travelling long after the airport emptied.
Newfoundland never sent those passengers a bill. They sent them home with a debt that could only be repaid by helping somebody else.
If an entire town opened every door it had for you during the worst week of your life, how would you ever say thank you?
