🌊 Big Changes at West Head! 🥾🌾

Incredible things happen when a community comes together! We are thrilled to share an update about the West Head Nature Conservancy land—property beautifully donated several years ago by Jane Alexander for everyone to enjoy.

Thanks to an amazing team effort, a massive cleanup and trail improvement project is almost officially complete!

🧹 Cleaning Up & Clearing Out
A dedicated crew took to the land and successfully removed 150 old fence posts wrapped in tangled barbed wire. Clearing out this old debris not only restores the natural beauty of the landscape but also makes the entire area significantly safer for wildlife and hikers alike.

🚶‍♂️ Better Access for Everyone
If you’ve walked the trail before, you know the main path had a habit of turning into a bit of a swamp. To fix this, a new culvert has been installed to properly manage the water flow. This will help dry up the main walkway, making this breathtaking coastal area much more accessible and enjoyable for locals and tourists to explore all season long.

🪵 A Massive Thank You!
This project wouldn't have been possible without a few incredible people who stepped up to make a huge difference:

Our Phenomenal Local Volunteers: Thank you to everyone who showed up, rolled up their sleeves, and put in the hard physical labor.

Nature Conservancy of Canada | Nova Scotia: A huge shout-out to Doug van Hemessen and Aiden for their guidance, support, and hard work on the ground.

Mark Williams Excavating: A massive thank you for bringing in the heavy machinery and doing the serious heavy lifting to get the job done right.

It’s proof positive that a small, dedicated group of people can make a massive, lasting impact. Next time you're out near West Head, come check out the improved trail and enjoy the view! 🌅✨

Tiny Neighbors, Big Milestones! 🌊🐦
We have some incredibly exciting news from the shoreline! Our local Piping Plovers are officially getting ready to welcome the next generation.

If you look closely at the photos, you can see one of our resident plovers staying perfectly camouflaged and dutifully sitting on a nest right in the beach grass!

To help protect these tiny, endangered beach dwellers during this critical nesting season, a section of Crescent Beach has been safely roped off. When you're out enjoying the sand, please give these hardworking parents plenty of space and keep an eye out for their amazing camouflage.

"Whether it’s your first summer or your fiftieth, once you’ve walked our beaches and shared our stories, you’re one of us. Welcome home, Lockeporter."

A heartfelt message on what it means to be a " Lockeporter" (By Nicole Stephens)

Welcome Home, Lockeporter.
If you have ever called Lockeport home you are a Lockeporter.
You are a Lockeporter if you are new here, are here for a short time, or once lived here.
You are a Lockeporter if you work, live or play here.
You are a Lockeporter if you lived/grew up in any of the surrounding area –If youve ever
attended any of our schools. If your grandparents or relatives lived here and Lockeport
is near and dear to your heart - a core part of your childhood and memories.
You are a Lockeporter if you show up to the kids games, proudly wearing your green
and cheering on the Greenwave. If you know what the Jello tree is, if you smile and
wave to oncoming traffic - regardless of whether or not you know them. You my friend,
are a Lockeporter.
If you’re a regular visitor and stop to talk to the locals, if you check out floyds boats, take
in our breathtaking views, enjoy the walking loop, the beaches, the harbour and in
general enjoy our town – you are a lockeporter.
If Lockeport is where your heart calls home, but you’ve spread your wings to start a new
life, family, home or career elsewhere in this world, you will always be a Lockeporter.
Lockeport is home if we’re part of your past, present or future – you are welcome here.
Lockeport will always be your home.
If you’ve moved here from anywhere in Canada, The USA or overseas or anywhere
else in the world and have chosen to make Lockeport your home, we love you and we
welcome you.
Your voice matters, your presence in our community matters. Having you here, makes
Lockeport a better place. We welcome you, we value you and we appreciate you.
Welcome Home.

Nature's Relentless Claim

Looking out across the crashing waves, the view offers a bittersweet reminder of the Atlantic's relentless power. Seeing these images side-by-side reveals a tragic transformation. First built in 1853, the station was manned by dozens of dedicated local keepers and their families over the decades, braving the isolation and fierce weather to keep the lamps burning. For generations, this iconic Lockeport landmark located off the coast within the Municipality of Shelburne stood strong against the elements, serving as a steadfast beacon that guided sailors safely through the fog and fury of the sea.

But time and the unforgiving ocean are taking their toll. Once a guardian of the coast, Gull Rock Lighthouse is now a symbol of decay. The stark contrast between how it once stood and how it looks today is heartbreaking to see. The last winter storms accelerated its demise, leaving it in a state of advanced ruin with its walls laid bare to the wind.

Though the structure is slowly fading into the sea, the memories, bravery, and history it represents remain deeply anchored in our community. Sadly, as the relentless tides continue to pull at its foundation, we are witnessing the final chapters of a piece of our maritime heritage.
