It is with great sadness that we were informed this morning of the passing of Dennis Chafer. Den and Di were married at Pitts Landing
thirty years ago. An ardent fisherman, Den spent many hours on Moira Lake as well as in Florida and Texas in winter. Our sympathy to Di and to their family. Den will be missed by his many friends at Pitts Landing.

Campfires are now allowed!

Fire Ban Update – Modified Burning Now Permitted

Updated as of: September 26th, 2025

The Centre Hastings Fire Department has lifted the recent fire ban; however, modified burning restrictions remain in place to protect community safety.

Recent rainfall has helped, but local water sources remain low and vulnerable. The original ban was implemented due to insufficient water availability, which would have impacted our ability to respond to a major fire event. While some recovery has occurred, ongoing dry conditions require continued caution.

Please read the following guidelines carefully before burning:

✅ What is Permitted

-Small recreational campfires (maximum size: 1m x 1m) for cooking or warmth.
-Contained outdoor appliances such as chimineas, outdoor fireplaces, and CSA-approved fire pits.
-Brush burning is allowed between 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. only, in piles no larger than 2m x 2m. Fires must be completely extinguished by morning.

❌ What is NOT Permitted

-Burning of grass fields, large brush piles, or land-clearing debris.
-Burning of garbage, construction waste, or hazardous materials.
-Any fire larger than the sizes listed above.

🔒 Conditions for All Fires

Fires must be attended at all times by an adult (19+).
You must have adequate tools and water on hand to control and fully extinguish the fire.

All burning is subject to Centre Hastings Fire By-law 2014-31.
Restrictions may be reinstated without notice if weather or water conditions worsen.

The Fire Department will continue to monitor local conditions closely. Full fire permissions will be restored once it is safe to do so.

In the mid-1960s, the Clement family claimed the whole of Jim and Marlene Babcock's point! We are happy that sixty plus years later, the fourth generation of the Clement family are still enjoying summers at Pitts Landing. Thanks to Matt and Debbie Clement for the photo.

NOTICE: Burn Ban Remains in Effect.
Despite recent rainfall, only 8mm fell across the local area. Water levels remain extremely low, limiting available resources for firefighting. For these reasons, and in alignment with neighbouring municipalities, the Municipality of Centre Hastings is maintaining the Total Fire Ban put in place on August 5, 2025 until further notice.

- No open-air burning
- No campfires
- No fireworks

“We appreciate the community’s patience and continued cooperation in keeping our community safe during the burn ban,” says Fire Chief Derek Snider. “Updates will be shared as conditions change.”
