Today is world turtle day! We love our three species of turtles here at . Coming up is nesting season. As you drive in late May and June please keep your eyes peeled πŸ‘€ for turtles on roadways. This is one of the biggest problems for turtles as they travel long distances to find appropriate nesting sites, often crossing roadways. We will be running a program this summer for families to learn all about turtles through experiential activities. Keep an eye out on our posting boards for "Turtles in Trouble" this summer! Can't wait to see you all out at the park 🐒

Give me a sniff and you may get a whiff
of an odor quite crummy that'll upset your tummy
I smell sort of rotten to not be forgotten
by the flies who arrive for a treat but it's lies!
The flies that will crawl'in get covered in pollen
This ruse rather neat makes my seeds quite complete
for the ants to go carry and later they burry
like that they will spread creating a bed
of flowers to view for people, like you!
A Red Trillium in . They can be seen in bloom now in the park! Learn more about trilliums and some of the fascinating adaptations eluded to in this bad poem in the folowing park blog!

Park staff are excited to welcome visitors back to Samuel de Champlain this Friday. Upon arrival, you may notice that our landscape looks a bit different than in previous years. Please be patient with us as we continue to recover from the effects of the June 21 storm, which severely impacted park infrastructure.

Although we’re proud of the work completed to-date, to support the park and The Canadian Ecology Centre’s recovery, there’s a lot more to accomplish this summer. Due to ongoing restoration efforts, certain areas of the park are closed. Please respect all closures and maintain a safe distance from work crews to ensure everyone's safety.

Did you know that 500 trees have already been planted to help restore biodiversity and rebuild important habitat for species at risk? The road resurfacing project at Samuel de Champlain has reached substantial completion, right in time for the 2026 operating season. This much anticipated infrastructure renewal project will directly benefit visitors to the park and The Canadian Ecology Centre as we prepare to reopen on May 8, 2026.

An eco-passage as well as exclusion fencing with several escape ramps have been installed to support the park’s resident turtle populations. Despite these improvements, park staff want to remind motorists to always use caution when traveling on park roads to mitigate human-wildlife interactions.

For the past 10 months, park staff have been hard at work preparing Samuel de Champlain for reopening. Hydro restoration, extensive tree removal, and critical infrastructure repairs have been our focus during this important recovery phase.

Since the storm, Ontario Parks has extended support to The Canadian Ecology Centre, allowing both sites to reopen for May 8, 2026.

We can’t wait to welcome you back to Samuel de Champlain in just a few short weeks as we begin a new camping season.
