Since 2020, we have been actively involved in cultivating and (re)planting local trees and plants. Over the past 3 to 4 years, thousands of trees have already been planted at various locations. Our forest protects all ecosystems on Bonaire. Even our reefs are protected by preventing erosion. No trees: no nature. And our nature is what makes Bonaire so special! We believe, that within 1 generation, Bonaire can become much more biodiverse (and therefore greener!).

STINAPA and Indebon Bonaire are collaborating to make Parke Tului more accessible for all by installing a new ramp to the sea.โ™ฟ

The project began on February 10th 2024, and is expected to finish by February 24th, 2024. We are renovating the existing pier and stairs to ensure reliability first, then we will install the ramp in the second phase. To work effectively, the pool and pier will be closed for all activities during this time. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to a more accessible space for all! ๐Ÿ‘

Next week (12, 13, 15 and 16) we will be conducting capture-mark-recapture research in Lac Bay again! The aim of this research is to collect more data on the sea turtles foraging in the bay. We will deploy a 200m net with yellow, orange and white buoys attached to it. We will have up to 11 volunteers and staff members in the water swimming from one end to the net to the other. Our boat will always be close by.

If you are visiting Lac Bay next week, please be aware of our snorkelers in the water and please stay away from the net and STCB boat.

For any sea turtle emergencies, please contact our Hotline: +599 780 0433. If you have any more questions, please send us an email on [email protected]

We always try to develop better and more efficient ways to monitor sea turtle populations on Bonaire. One of the things we have been looking for is a way to identify individual turtles based on their facial scales. This is why we joined forces with FruitPunch AI to look at how we could use AI for the facial recognition of sea turtles.

The facial scales of sea turtles are unique, like a fingerprint, and can therefore be used to identify individual turtles. Over the last 20 years, we have tagged well over 4,000 turtles. During our tagging efforts, we do not only measure, weigh and tag the turtles, we also take photos of their head, flippers and carapace, creating a large photo database that was used for this challenge.

The FruitPunch AI team worked really hard on this project for 10 weeks, resulting in an application that can identify sea turtles by scale recognition. The tool proved to be useful right away: the FruitPunch team was able to match two turtles that had lost their metal tags based on their unique facial patterns! We were amazed at what they accomplished in only 10 weeks, and we believe this application can support sea turtle conservation efforts in the entire Wider Caribbean Region (Wider Caribbean Sea Turtle Conservation Network (WIDECAST)). On Bonaire, we will start to use the application in addition to external metal and internal PIT tags.

During our capture-mark-recapture research along the west coast of Bonaire, we captured this green turtle yesterday.

The first time we captured him or her was on September 2, 2021. Since then, he or she has visited our boat every year! Based on the data that we have collected; this turtle has gained 3 kilos over the last years and is gaining an average of 1.23 kg/year. He or she also grew exactly 8 cm, resulting in a growth of 3.28 cm/year (which is slightly above average on the west coast).

We hope to see him or her back again next year!
