A cottage getaway should be something the whole family can enjoy. 🌿🌊

Accessibility at Watters Edge matters to me personally. As Shawn’s wife and caregiver, I know how much planning can go into a holiday and how much the right setup matters.

Our cottage’s accessibility features include:

♿ An elevator connecting the levels through the sunroom
🛏️ An accessible master bedroom and bathroom
🚿 A large roll-in shower, with a shower commode or shower bench available
🤍 A standing pole in the accessible bathroom
🦽 A Hoyer lift available for transfers
🌊 A ramped dock with a lift into the water
🔥 A barrier-free fire pit area for evenings together around the fire
🛌 An adjustable queen bed will be in the master bedroom for our summer 2027 rentals

❄️ We also installed air conditioning this year, making those hot, humid summer nights more comfortable for a better night’s sleep.

With three bedrooms, two full bathrooms and a sunroom overlooking the lake, there’s space to spend time together or find a quiet moment of your own.

Everyone’s accessibility needs are different. Message me to talk through the setup, ask for measurements or photos, and see whether Watters Edge would work for you and your family.

🍂 October at Watters Edge 🍂

Summer gets plenty of attention, but October is a beautiful time to visit the cottage. The changing leaves are spectacular, the air is crisp, and a coffee overlooking the lake is a pretty good way to start the day.

There’s plenty happening in our surrounding Stone Mills communities on weekends, too! This weekend brings pumpkin trails, a corn maze, local vendors, live performances, haunted walks and a community breakfast. Check out the calendar for ideas. 🎃

Spend the day exploring, then settle into the sunroom and enjoy the autumn colours across the lake.

A little adventure, a little quiet, and time to exhale. 🍁

WATTERS EDGE COTTAGE has always been shaped by my life as a caregiver. Finding a place where our family could spend time together, with accessibility, comfort, and room to breathe, felt personal.

I know some of you are here for those same reasons. You may be caring for someone you love, navigating changing needs, or trying to make space for yourself while carrying a lot.

That’s why I’m sharing a resource from my TBI Wife Life page: My Long-Term Care Checklist.

Considering long-term care can feel overwhelming. Knowing what to ask and what to look for can help you feel more prepared as you explore options for someone you love.

After 14 years caring for my husband at home and then navigating his move into long-term care, this is a journey I know personally.

HAPPY TURKEY DAY
Our tradition looks a little different, in our family we call it a pre-Halloween dinner 🎃🖤 Costumes optional, good food and laughter guaranteed.

Spending it on the lake with the leaves changing is pretty magical. Such an incredible setting to gather, and I’m fortunate that I live with an amazing cook. Dinner was delicious 😋 !

Feeling thankful for the people I love, time together, and the memories we keep making at the cottage. Next year we will be making them at my new house 🥰

Connecting with your girlfriends is healing. Give us time away, something creative to do, and room to laugh and we’ll take it from there. 🖤

Girls’ weekends are something I know a lot about, and this weekend was all about fall crafts, making decorative brooms and wreaths with a little witchy flair. There’s something about crafting together that makes the conversations flow and the everyday stress fade.

It’s also inspiration for what’s coming to Watters Edge: girls’ weekend packages with craft supplies and thoughtful welcome gifts. A few extra touches to help you settle in, get creative, and enjoy time with your people. 🍂✨

This may look a little different from my usual cottage content, but it belongs here too.
Because Watters Edge Cottage is accessible, this page naturally attracts caregivers, families living with disability, and people looking for ways to create meaningful experiences with their loved ones.
As my mom’s dementia progressed, I sometimes struggled to know how to connect with her or make our visits feel meaningful. That experience inspired me to create the monthly Ways to Connect pages as part of my role on Family Council.
Just because our loved ones can’t communicate in a way we easily understand doesn’t mean they no longer need connection. A familiar song, a photograph, a seasonal memory, or simply holding their hand can still reach them. They deserve to feel seen, heard and loved, regardless of their cognitive or physical abilities.

This view means more to me than just arriving at the cottage.

It represents everything I’ve had to learn along the way. I've learned to let go of what I can’t control, stop explaining myself to people committed to misunderstanding me, trust the timing of my life and choose peace without feeling guilty for it.

For years, my life was about surviving, caregiving and making sure everyone else was okay. This place became part of finding my way back to myself.

Every time I come down the hill and see the water, I’m reminded: I didn’t come this far just to keep surviving.

I’m allowed to live, too. 🖤

♿💦 Because everyone deserves to get in the lake.

One of the accessibility features at Watters Edge Cottage that means the most to us is our dock lift.

Here’s Shawn using it to transfer directly from the dock into the lake. There's no trying to navigate uneven shoreline or figure out an unsafe transfer.

The water is shallow off the dock, making it a great spot to cool off, float and enjoy the lake on a beautiful summer day. ☀️

Watters Edge was created from our own experience travelling and spending time at the cottage with a wheelchair user. We know how much the little details can determine whether someone simply visits the lake or actually gets to experience it.

We’re looking forward to welcoming guests back in Summer 2027 and sharing more of the accessibility features along the way. 💙

After 18 years of caregiving, I thought I’d seen every wheelchair feature there was.

Then Shawn’s new power chair arrived with a joystick on the back so I can drive when he needs a hand.

Needless to say, my shoulders are wondering where this little invention has been all these years. 😂

Sometimes it’s the smallest innovations that make the biggest difference, not just for the person using the chair, but for the caregiver too. 💙

Smoke is drifting into our area from active wildfires in Northern Ontario. This has resulted in hazy skies, reduced visibility and poor air quality.

During these times, here are some tips to keep in mind.
1. Those with respiratory issues should take caution when outside for periods of time.
2. If you only notice a smell of smoke and do not see any active fire, pause and confirm that there is an active fire before calling 9-1-1.
