Winter was long and spring has been miserable cold for Nestor Falls. We are finally seeing summer like temperatures this weekend. The lake is warming, all the signs of late spring are coming now. Tree pollen and tree debris are all over the lake. All those early insects are hatching in mass and on the move. The shallow water next to shore feels good on calm days or days with waves blowing in. Need to keep in mind, just how dangerous the water is right now and that warm water floats to very top. The cold cold water (mid 40’s F or near 5C) is just a few inches or maybe feet below the surface. Kakagi (Crow) Lake is clear, deep water that warms much more slowly than Lake of the Woods, and shallow areas like Stevens Bay on LOTW is usually 10F-20F degrees warmer than Kakagi.
When the tree pollen clears and after our Mayfly hatch, swimming is much safer. When our daughters were young, it needed to be 60F to swim with life jackets and 65F to swim without life jackets. Wadding into water up to knees is fine, but don’t stay in long, else water insects like chiggers will find you. Last week of June or first week of July is when conditions are better and safer. Fully understand the want to swim in the lake, but a quick dip is much better right now.
A couple life jacket reminders. 1) an inflatable life jacket, doesn’t count as a life jacket unless it is being worn. It’s a law and Treaty 3 Ontario Provincial Police boats have been actively watching and stopping people on Kakagi. 2) life jackets are required while using any Boreal Bay water raft or float that could be paddled. Canoe, kayak, pedal boat, row boat, and stand up paddle boards. 3) Children 10 and under, need to be accompanied by an adult and should be wearing life jackets when near water.
Hypothermia is very real, but I think you will start losing muscle control sooner than the Internet suggests.
