CHANGE TO SOUTH OKANAGAN TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS STARTING AUGUST 23:

Bowinn Ma, Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, has released the following statement about travel restrictions for the purpose of staying in temporary accommodation:

“In recent days, B.C. experienced some of the most devastating wildfires in our history. We want to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who cancelled their plans to travel to the Interior in recent days, as well as to our partners in the tourism industry for their support and understanding.

“The emergency order we put in place on Saturday has had the effect we required and thousands of hotel rooms were made available for people forced from their homes, as well as the many firefighters and emergency crews who are protecting us during the worst wildfire season in our history. Working with local governments and First Nations, we will continue to place people in the accommodations that are now available.

“Because of this, we are lifting travel restrictions for the purpose of staying in temporary accommodation for most of the southern Interior, with the exception of West Kelowna. The order will be lifted for Kelowna, Kamloops, Oliver, Osoyoos, Penticton and Vernon starting tomorrow, Aug. 23, 2023.

“Non-essential travel to West Kelowna continues to be prohibited for the purpose of staying in temporary accommodation, including hotels, motels, inns, bed and breakfasts, hostels, RV parks, and campgrounds, to ensure accommodation is available for those who may need it.

Today is National Truth and Reconciliation Day, a new statutory holiday dedicated to acknowledging the deep injustices forced upon the Indigenous people of the places we live, work and play, especially through the Indian Residential School system. Although it may feel odd to “celebrate” such a day, remember that our calendar already has more than just “festive” holidays—it has solemn ones too. It is in that spirit that we encourage you to take today to reflect and listen.

Our site WILL be open today, but with a staff of one, and we invite you to join us in taking the time to consider our own site’s relationship with the Indigenous people of our region and how we can do better.

The truth is that this site represents a key piece of settlement history in the Similkameen, a history that saw the near extinction of the original Similkameen people due to smallpox. Those few who survived lost connection with their original Similkamx language and culture, but were thankfully adopted into the Syilx (Okanagan) Nation. They then had their land systematically removed, especially through the work of the Indian Land Comission, which repeatedly reduced the size of existing reserves in our area and elsewhere. The founder of our mill, Barrington Price, was one of the few settlers in the region at the time that spoke up to defend Indigenous interests, but many others argued for the complete abolition of reserves instead. And since then, there have been countless other ways in which the non-indigenous community has hurt, disrespected or marginalized the indigenous community—and yes, the Indian Residential School system has had an immeasurable impact on indigenous members of our community.

In the present day, some members of both the Lower and Upper Similkameen Indian Bands count Barrington Price among their ancestors and hold his legacy and this place close to their heart, but we acknowledge that we have a complex relationship with those who’ve called this place home since the Creator put them here.

We recognize that, as a heritage institution, we need to do much more to recognize the important contributions of Indigenous people to the history we present, as well as the impacts that the settlement of the Similkameen Valley has had on those who were already here. There’s a reason that truth comes before reconcilliation and we know we have to do our part to share the truth of the whole story, not just the easy parts.

Yes, it’s a holiday today, but we’re not celebrating—we’re listening, and learning. And we hope you are, too.

Now that the warmer weather is here to stay, there is simply nothing better than heading to the park or the beach with a picnic setup in tow. Today on the blog, I am sharing one of my all-time favourite kid-friendly picnic setups. All you'll need are a few egg cartons (yes, you read that right!) and your kiddos fave snacks, and treats. Check out today's blog for all the details.
