I love road trips

Over the past 2 years I have started to lose friends and family. I have decided to spend more time visiting them

This June 2024, I headed up to the Cariboo to visit two old friends who used to be my neighbours just off the road between 150 Mile House and Horse fly.
I met Bob Kjelusrud (on tractor) in 1977 and Rod Blake (on timber frame) in 1979 when I was 27 and 29 years old. Now we are all in our early 70s.

Back then we had great plans and knew everything. Now we look back in amazement on the path our lives took and realize we know very little.
These men showed me how to live on a bush property, took me in when I needed help, and showed me how important a community is.
It was a great time filled with work, laughter, reminiscing and a few tears for those we have lost.

My recommendation is, take a road trip, see your friends and family, it will do everyone's heart good.
(The lake view is from Bob's cottage on Horsefly Lake where Valerie and I spent some of our honeymoon Sep. 2000)

Valerie’s "Stairway to Health".

Dear Friends and Family,

Back in April/May I sent a message about my efforts to help fund the Peachland Wellness Center programs and services. I volunteer there as a bereavement counsellor and support many other activities as needed.

Their Walk for Wellness fundraising challenge helped me establish a routine walking the nearby "Stairway to Heaven" twice a week . 153 stairs straight up into the forest! This is on top of the average 5 to10 times a day I travel the 14 stairs down to the basement laundry/storage area!

I could probably walk to visit you now, but I'm not THAT athletic!

The fundraiser is now wrapping up July 3rd and I sincerely thank those who have already donated to the Wellness Centre site:

www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/101394 .

My team name "Stairway to Health".

Please call or message me if you have any questions or just to talk!
THANK YOU !

It was a surprise and honour to receive the “Excellence in Visionary Leadership” award as well as being nominated for the “Citizen of the Year” by the District of Peachland.

I may be in a leadership role with the Okanagan Folk School and Our SPACE, but as you well know it is all the dedicated people we work with that make things happen. Interestingly enough these awards have made me want to keep plugging away with these projects.

It is a special thing to have my work recognized by my peers. People I have worked with, shared ideas, and helped each other in times of personal stress.

Thank you, Peachland.

I never tire of the view from our bnb.

Valerie Wood’s Birthday; May 31, 2022

It was my Honey’s birthday May 31 and she needed an adventure. I hired Rodney Hennig of Rodney’s REEL Outdoors https://www.kelownafishing.com/ to take us trout fishing in the mountains back of Peachland.

Due to the cold weather and late spring, we caught 10 fish instead of the usual 25 to 30 that Rodney finds for us on that lake. The bug hatches just weren’t happening. We had double headers, fish taking the fly when the line was hanging over the side of the boat, battling marauding loons (they got 2 of our fish) and lots of laughs. A heavy cold rain finally drove us off the lake, but we had fish for dinner and a wonderful memory.

I love that particular smile Valerie gets when she catches a fish. A great day and memories.

The Okanagan Folk School’s Grand Opening was a Success

I have lived in Peachland for seven years now. As a director of the Chamber of Commerce I have been stumped by the question “How do we bring business to Peachland in the off season?”

Fourteen months ago, I found the answer. Through a casual conversation I discovered the North House Folk School. A folk school that has brought new prosperity and community to the village it is based in.

Fourteen months later on April 9th and 10th the Okanagan Folk School (OKFS) opened its doors. It was a great success.

OKFS offers year-round classes in craft, art, music, dance, cooking, gardening, nature studies, building, photography, writing, fiber arts and much more.

It's about inspiring hands, hearts, and minds.

Okanagan Folk School Has a 4-pillar Approach:
1. To bring off season revenue to the town of Peachland.

2. To create more employment for our artisans/instructors.

3. To create community amongst the students and the town of Peachland (through courses, community hosts and events).

4. Establish Peachland as the craft/art/applied skills educational Centre of Western Canada.

You can see our courses at www.okfolkschool.ca

The Okanagan Folk School

The Okanagan Folk School (OKFS) is a BC Non-Profit Society, unique for its dedication to teaching the arts, crafts, and cultural heritage of the Okanagan region. Made up of local artisans, crafts people, and volunteers, we offer non-competitive education focusing on the student. Located in Peachland, BC. a lakefront community, in the Central Okanagan, it is a region of wineries, orchards, golf, hiking, and mild winters.

Our Mission

Our mission is to create a strong community in Peachland dedicated to the joy of teaching, learning, and enriching the lives of our local citizens as well as folks from around the world. This will have Peachland become a significant year-round centre of learning in Western Canada. This mission also includes holding community events and seasonal celebrations and activities for children and families.
