THE LATEST MOVE BY AIRBNB

I have beefs with a lot of OTAs (Online Travel Agencies) and have been meaning to post a “Beware of OTAs” message for a while. For today, I’ll direct you to what Airbnb is doing.

So, Airbnb is doing a thing. I’m not sure if it will benefit guests or not but it will appear to make hosts’ rates higher.

Airbnb always charged, and still will, a Guest Service Fee (approx. 15% in these parts) which was for nothing, really, except to line their already overflowing pockets. Okay, there was a flimsy guise as to why this “protected” a guest but, really, have you ever needed it? This fee can amount to a LOT and can be avoided by simply booking directly with those places for which it is possible to do so.

Airbnb used to post the host’s nightly rate and then, in the booking process, the guest saw the nightly rate subtotal (room rate X number of nights), applicable fees (resort fee, parking, pet, cleaning, etc.), taxes, the Guest Service fee, then a total and, lastly, there was payment processing. ALL WAS TRANSPARENT.

Now, ALL of the above is calculated into a nightly rate (no obvious breakdown) which makes it look like hosts have jacked their prices. Airbnb claims it is a simplification but, really, in my opinion, all is does is make their pricing opaque and hides their 15% guest service fee.

The Farmers’ Market was hopping - what a gorgeous day it was to be there!

The easiest visitors from neighbours are these guys. They don’t even want to come in to chat 😅

We observed an interesting phenomenon in the sky at about 1:00pm today . . .
A SOLAR HALO!
This picture was taken with my iPhone so although it is a record, it does not display the rainbow colours actually seen.

An example of neighbourhood shenanigans.

The video taken by my friend just up the road and she graciously allowed me to share it.
