The rain came today.

Soft on the leaves, steady on the road, gathering in the gardens, reminding us how much the land has been waiting.

After weeks of dry heat and dust, there is something deeply renewing about rain. It slows everything down. It brings out the green. It settles the air. It reminds us that rest is not empty time. Rest is part of how life returns.

Today, Naramata Centre feels washed, quiet, and grateful.

The leaves are holding tiny pools of water. The irises are bowing under the weight of it. The road through the village is shining. Even the hills seem to be breathing a little easier.

Rain can feel like an interruption, especially in a place people come to enjoy the sun. But today it feels like a gift. A blessing for the trees, the gardens, the creek, the lake, and all the living things that call this place home.

A day for warm drinks, slower walks, open windows, and gratitude for renewal.

With Gratitude for a Beloved Willow

Tomorrow, May 21, a professional arborist crew is scheduled to be on site to remove the Willow tree at the back of Creek House. Our arborist has advised that the tree is at the end of its safe life and needs to be removed. This Willow has been a friend, a neighbour, and a home for many beings for countless years. Before this transition, we invite you to join us in taking a quiet moment of gratitude for the life of this tree, and for the life giving energy it has shared so generously. Its presence will continue in transformed ways, through memory, soil, shelter, and the ongoing life of this place.

May 17 is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia. Join us today in support of the non-negotiable truth of every person’s dignity.

Creator, we come to you with both the joys and the sorrows of our hearts.
We are grateful for the gift of life and the joy that it can bring.
For families and friends who love us.
For allies who stick up for us, even when we cannot risk sticking up for ourselves.
For the great diversity you have created in our world.
We pray for those who suffer from discrimination because of their gender identity or sexual orientation.
Who worry about their employment or who cannot find a job.
For those who must hide who they are to find housing.
For those who are not safe on our streets.
For those who do not feel safe in their place of worship.
Help us to end homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia, and all forms of discrimination and hate.
Show us the way to make this world a better place for all.

We have been watching the owls all spring. A nest high in the canopy, the slow patience of waiting, and then the small wonder of seeing the owlets begin to hatch. Each day a little more grown.

Then this week, a quilt appeared outside Alberta Hall.

A staff member spotted it on the way past and posted a photo to our team chat: does anyone know what this is about?

Sanj knew. Our operations manager had seen one of the owlets on the ground, fallen from the nest and clearly in distress. So she did what someone who loves this place would do. She found a Naramata quilt, laid it out on the gravel, and propped a long stick across it, hoping it might give the owlet a softer place to wait and something to climb.

That quilt has been wrapped around shoulders on porches in the morning chill. It has held tired guests after long drives, kids in cabin beds, and friends on the lawn under the trees. This week it became a soft place for a very small life to rest.

And then one of the parents came for the owlet, and lifted it gently back up to the tree.

This is the kind of thing that happens at Naramata. The trees here are full of creatures we are still learning to recognize, and our staff carry a quiet kindness for all of them. A quilt, a stick, a steady set of hands, and on Monday, the whole story arriving at our weekly staff meeting like a small gift.

Thank you, Sanj. Thank you, owls. And thank you to every person who has ever touched this quilt, leaving it soft and patient and exactly right for this one small life.

Today we honour mothers, grandmothers, aunties, caregivers, mentors, chosen family, and all who offer care in quiet and generous ways.
We also hold space for those for whom this day is tender, complicated, or full of longing.
May today bring gentleness, gratitude, and moments of rest. From the lake, the trees, and the Naramata Centre community, we send love to all who nurture life, belonging, and connection.

Today we mark Red Dress Day, remembering and honouring the thousands of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people.
We hold their lives with reverence, and we stand with the families and communities who carry grief, love, and ongoing calls for justice.

As people of faith, we are called not only to remember, but to listen, to learn, and to speak out against the systems of racism, violence, and injustice that continue to harm Indigenous communities.

May we be people who honour truth, seek justice, and walk in right relationship with one another.

The owls have been reviewing the summer reservations, and frankly, they have questions.

Mainly: where is your name?

They have been keeping watch over Alberta Hall, staring dramatically from the trees, and looking far too confident for birds who do not actually work in bookings. We also think they would be terrifyingly good at the “don’t blink” game.

Summer is filling up at Naramata Centre, and the owls are watching.

Come back to the lake. They are expecting you.

This summer, people are choosing Naramata Centre - and today, we felt it deeply.
Summer Session registration opened this morning, and we were humbled to welcome hundreds of guests who have chosen to spend a week or two at Naramata Centre this summer. For many, it feels like welcome home.... a return to a place where spirituality is lived gently and generously, where silence and song share space, and where community is shaped by care for one another. For others, it will be a first experience of the magic: the lake and the trees, meaningful programs, shared rhythms of rest and learning, and a spirituality that is open, curious, and grounded in everyday life. If you haven’t registered yet, we encourage you to do so soon. Weeks are already filling.,,,REALLY quickly!

We are deeply grateful for this response - and for the way people continue to choose connection, belonging, and spiritual depth in their summers.
It’s going to be an amazing summer. https://www.naramatacentresociety.org
