Campers please take note!

Good afternoon.

Lots of summer heat ahead again this week. A trough of low pressure and accompanying cold front will trigger showery conditions and a risk of thunderstorms in the region Tuesday into Wednesday.

While the thunderstorms will be hit-and-miss in coverage the atmosphere will more primed for severe thunderstorms than typical for our region. That is particularly the case for northern and western New Brunswick Tuesday afternoon through evening.

There is plenty of energy and moisture available to fuel the thunderstorms and a good "trigger" in the approaching cold front to fire them off. The wind profile late in the day on Tuesday is also more favourable to produce rotating thunderstorms which increases the risk of tornadoes. Not all thunderstorms on Tuesday will produce a tornado, but the risk is increased with rotation.

The most likely hazards will be locally strong winds gusts in the vicinity of the thunderstorms. Downpours and potential hail of 1-2 cm. Lighting of course is dangerous anytime.

Evaluating the blanket conditions for severe thunderstorms on Tuesday is one thing, but pinpointing specific communities or areas that they are a risk to is a day-of matter. It takes starting to see where the thunderstorms are developing and moving on satellite and radar imagery. Be weather aware and have a way to monitor for any watches/warnings issued. Remember that the situation with severe thunderstorms can change quickly.

Campers, did you know that just minutes from Baird’s Campground stands one of New Brunswick’s most remarkable trees?

“The Big Tree” is estimated to be more than 500 years old, it was already growing long before New Brunswick was a province, Canada was a country, or anyone had ever dreamed of an RV.

Have you visited it yet?

Take a look at the largest & oldest old growth white pine in New Br...
