When I purchase The Sanctuary in 2016 I knew that I wasn’t her ‘owner’, but instead was her caretaker. Like any old building (she’s nearly 150 years old!), there have been some surprises as I’ve gotten to know her better. Before The Sanctuary ever landed on AirBNB, I dealt with bats, a leaning queen post, a broken furnace, bees nests, old floor boards, and more.
During some routine ‘caretaker’ work, I recently noticed that some of the plaster and lathe ceiling was looking crumbly. After consulting with some incredible folks including a plaster specialist and an engineer, I have decided to take the safe road and have the beautiful old ceiling redone. This means taking down the original tin ceiling and the plaster & lathe underneath it.
It was a difficult decision to cancel the summer (and possibly longer), but safety is always paramount. It also provides a long-awaited opportunity to restore the choir, attic, and bell tower (it has 360 degree views of the county)! We are also working with to redo the front porch to provide more privacy to our guests.
Thank you to everyone who has loved The Sanctuary, and for all your well-wishes. We can’t wait to welcome you back to The Sanctuary 2.0 ⛪️
