Put out to pasture… but apparently retirement didn’t stick!

This 1959 International was a staple on the farm I grew up on through the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. Its 200-bushel box hauled plenty of grain back then—today, it would barely give a big combine a breather.

After sitting in the pasture for over 25 years, it’s back with a new purpose. We’ve got a few modifications in mind and some plans for its next chapter at our Barn B&B.

What are we turning it into? You’ll have to follow along to find out! 👀

Stop #4 • Wingspread Cottages
Stanley Bridge, Prince Edward Island

Tracey and I left New Brunswick and crossed the impressive Confederation Bridge—quite a welcome to PEI for our next three days!

We chose Wingspread Cottages for its location and spacious cottage, all to ourselves. But it was the barn in the yard that caught my eye. Apparently, holidays don’t stop me from checking out barns! 😂

A veranda around the house, chickens roaming the yard and a friendly dog made us feel right at home. Hosts John and Timea added that personal touch, with great conversations and recommendations that took us to places we might otherwise have missed.

One highlight was Cape Tryon Lighthouse—a hidden gem with a beautiful view. On our way to North Cape, we also visited the parents of a coworker from Holiday Mountain. Their warm welcome and tour of their breathtaking acreage were PEI hospitality at its finest.

Our hosts also recommended New Glasgow Lobster Suppers. We’d highly recommend it too—one of the best-value meals of our trip. You certainly won’t leave hungry! 🦞

We rounded out our island visit exploring Charlottetown, including a Harbour Hopper tour showing us the city from both land and water.

What we brought home to Currie Country Living:
This stay reinforced something we already believe: meeting our guests, sharing a conversation and offering local recommendations can make a good stay even more memorable.

Eighteen pictures and plenty of happy memories. PEI, we’ll be back! ❤️

Stop #3 • Eagle View Comfy Camper
Hopewell Cape, New Brunswick

Our 3,000-km Maritime adventure took a little detour! We’d planned to take the Digby ferry to Saint John, but it was fully booked. Lesson learned: book that crossing ahead!

Instead, we drove around, enjoyed the scenery, and stopped along the way before settling into our first Airbnb camper experience.

The location was a winner: lovely Bay of Fundy views and just a five-minute drive from Hopewell Rocks, which had been high on our wish list.

The camper itself? Tracey and I discovered we’re accustomed to a little more elbow room! 😂 At $172 for the night, it felt a bit expensive for the space we had, although the setting and convenience certainly added value.

What really caught our hosting eyes was the guestbook and a separate guide to nearby restaurants and attractions. That’s something we’ve talked about adding at Currie Country Living—and this stay moved it higher on our list.

Our extra touch would be to include approximate driving times alongside addresses: “five minutes away” or “a half-hour drive” helps guests plan their day.

We came for the tides and left with another idea for the barn: a comfortable stay is even better when you help guests enjoy what’s beyond the doorstep! One of the happiest parts of our 3,000-km Maritime trip was spending a night with my first cousin Karen and her husband Scott.

They had recently moved from Toronto to Prospect Bay, and discovering we could fit a visit into our travels made this stop extra special.

Their home and surroundings were beautiful, but what we’ll remember most is the time together—catching up, sharing a meal, and enjoying their warm hospitality. Karen took us to a favourite nearby restaurant for wonderful lobster and fish, and they shared local knowledge that made our trip even better.

Our stay reminded us of something we want every guest at Currie Country Living to feel: that we’re happy you’re here.

A comfortable place matters, but so does feeling welcomed and cared for. We hope our barn gives guests a little of that family feeling—and a reason to return.

Thank you, Karen and Scott. We’re so glad our trip brought us to your door. ❤️

Country Hosts on the Road 🚗 1 of 6 stays
We traded hosting at the barn for being guests in the Maritimes! Our 3,000-km adventure started in Halifax—and brought us home with stories, fresh ideas, and a few little touches to try here at Currie Country Living.

Our 10-day Maritime trip gave Tracey and me a chance to be the guests—and pick up a few ideas for Currie Country Living along the way!

Our first stop was the “Adorable Studio Apartment” in Halifax, September 20–22. At $281 for two nights, including cleaning fees and taxes—$140.50 a night—we felt it was very good value for the location . Check in was simple and easy with clear instructions

We loved the layout, the comfortable space, and the nearby walking paths. Downtown was a $16 Uber ride away. Our airport taxi cost $70, but once settled in, getting around was easy.

I also met our lovely host, Sherry, who made good use of space in her townhouse to earn some extra income and help pay for the upkeep to townhouse.

Like our Stable suite at the barn, the apartment was below living quarters. We occasionally heard someone moving upstairs, but it never bothered us.

My only wish? A few more outlets, especially beside the bed. Between phones and editing equipment, I travel with enough cords to knit a sweater! 😂

Our takeaway for the barn: a thoughtful layout makes a smaller space work beautifully—and a handy place to charge your phone is a little detail worth remembering.

That’s funny—our anxious six-year-old house cat, who seldom ventures outside, disappeared in late July. After weeks of searching, we feared we’d lost her, although we had no idea what had happened.

Imagine our surprise when she showed up two and a half months later while we were on vacation and our son was checking the house! She was about half her usual weight, but it looked as though someone had been caring for her.

We’re still not sure what her story is—and so far, she’s keeping her adventures to herself!

I’ll be back at Holiday Mountain this winter, working the magic carpet! ⛷️

I love watching brand-new skiers go from “How do I stand up on these things?” to “Look at me go!” by the end of the day. A few wobbles, a little snow down the collar, and a whole new skill to take home!

Looking forward to catching up with last year’s crew and welcoming the new faces. From the barn to the ski hill—just trading my chore boots for snow boots. See you on the carpet! ❄️

Holiday Mountain is still actively recruiting staff for our upcoming 2026/27 season. We are looking to fill a wide variety of positions throughout the resort's operations, so there is sure to be a position for you on our team!

Interested applicants please reach out to General Manager, Abe Sawatzky, by email to [email protected] or by telephone 204-242-2172.

Even on vacation, we can’t seem to stay away from old barns. 😄

We spent three days in a cabin near Cavendish, PEI, and the barn on the property was what first caught our eye. It even hosted a farmers market on Saturday. We’ve loved exploring this part of the Island, but today we’re off to Nova Scotia’s Cabot Trail before starting the journey home.

I guess when you run Currie Country Living, a good barn always feels a little like home.
