When I was a young child, about eight years old, I wanted a bedside table. Being one of five children with just my dad working, I knew my parents couldn’t afford one. Determined to have a night table, I made one out of a cardboard box covered with leftover wallpaper. My mother was very impressed with my effort continuously encouraged me to re-purpose everything and anything.
When I grew up, my mother and I shared a passion for finding antique and vintage items that could be re-purposed. We spent weekends scouring through various shops and I started to collect and refinished old furniture. My mother started to talk about my dream of opening up an antique shop in the barn on our century farmhouse property.
Sadly, my mother became ill and was passing. Her friends and children took turns reading to her from a mystery book called, A Crewel World by Gennifer Albin. The characters in the book go to a vintage shop in Minnesota called Antiquity Rose. When I read that passage to my mother, we looked at each other and said together, “What a great name for an antique shop!”
One year after my mother passed in 2009, I registered my new business, Antiquity Rose Canada, on April 1, her birthday. I opened my shop focusing on affordable prices, ideas for using and refinishing re-purposed items, presenting the work of local artists and craftspeople, and I even offer select new treasures that fit my shop vision.
After operating my shop 10 years, my husband and I began a new venture for Antiquity Rose Canada - bed and breakfast located in the top floor of our farmhouse. We officially launched on September 22, 2019 with tours of bed and breakfast, my “wee” shop and a marketplace with various local artists, authors, jewelers and more. We also presented Travel with Antiquity Rose, specialized trips to Paris, France, in partnership with DeNure Tours, located in Lindsay.
Since the launch of Antiquity Rose Canada shop, visitors and customers started referring to
me as “Rose.” I love my nickname because roses represent St. Therese, the saint my mother prayed to. St. Therese was from a small town outside of Paris called Lisieux. Antiques, roses and Paris have become meaningful in my life as a link to my mother and for representing the harmony of history, beauty and artistry.
My husband Mark and I are so pleased to share our home with guests to our bed and breakfast, to customers who roam our shop, and to travelers who share the love of Paris.
