One of the many incredible things about Nalu Retreat is something you can't actually see. It's hidden more than 350 feet beneath our feet!

When we were building Nalu, we needed a reliable source of water. That meant drilling deep into the earth, through hundreds of feet of solid Nova Scotia granite.

And after drilling more than 350 feet down, we finally hit an underground spring!

It's amazing to think that every time we turn on a tap at Nalu, that water is coming from deep beneath the same beautiful landscape that surrounds us.

We often talk about our panoramic lake views, towering trees, private hot tubs, and the peacefulness of being immersed in nature. But there's an entire world beneath the surface that most people never think about.

For me, that's one of the fascinating parts of creating a retreat in the middle of nature. You discover things you never expected, and you develop a whole new appreciation for the land.

Sometimes the most remarkable part of a place is something you can't even see.

What Is a Digital Detox? Have you ever picked up your phone to check one message, then realized twenty minutes had disappeared? We have. We still do. Between running a business, answering emails and staying connected, it’s easy to carry work into every quiet moment.

A digital detox means choosing a little time away from that constant checking. It could be a walk without scrolling, a meal without a phone on the table or an evening when the laptop stays closed. It doesn’t have to mean disappearing for a weekend. You can keep essential calls available, let people know when you’ll respond and pause the apps that pull your attention most.

Start small. Choose what you’re stepping away from, for how long and what you’d like to do instead. Read a few pages. Enjoy your coffee. Have a conversation without checking a notification halfway through. At Nalu Retreat, that’s the kind of space we want offer. Somewhere you can slow down, enjoy nature and spend time with yourself or someone you care about. You don’t have to make every quiet moment productive.

Why Adults Need Time Away

Being dependable does not mean being available every minute. Work, family, household tasks and caring for others can fill a day before you have thought about your own needs. Making time away takes planning, especially when other people depend on you. That does not make your need for a pause less valid.

Time away can be an afternoon, a quiet evening or a short getaway. Decide what would make it useful for you. Fewer decisions? A different view? Time with your partner? Let that need shape the plan rather than trying to fit in every possible activity.

For us, an adults-only retreat creates an opportunity to step out of the usual routine and choose a different pace. Some guests want time together. Others want solitude. Both deserve room.
