At low tide, the back bay transforms into a living map of water and land. Small tidal streams weave through the mid-flats, carving gentle paths toward the open channel while the surrounding mountains and forest reflect in the stillness.

Tucked into the wild heart of the Discovery Islands, Owen Bay on Sonora Island was once home to one of the most remote and rugged coastal school communities on the B.C. coast.
The first Owen Bay school wasn’t even a schoolhouse — it began in a settler’s home before moving into a floating fish-buyer’s building that served as the second classroom. In 1928, teacher Edith Proctor described the school as “very isolated with few settlers,” perched almost on the beach with no cleared playground and surrounded on all sides by powerful tidal rapids that made access difficult and unpredictable.
At one point, they advertised for a teacher with children just to boost attendance. Mrs. Van Der Est answered the call, arriving with her six children who rowed across the bay to school each day. Inside the classroom, wind pushed through cracks in the walls and high spring tides sometimes flooded the floor.
Life in Owen Bay demanded resilience, creativity, and a deep connection to the ocean — qualities that still define Sonora Island today. Though the school and early settlement days have passed, the spirit of this remote coastal community lives on in the quiet coves, tidal waters, and enduring stories of those who once called Owen Bay home.

Here is where protected waters smooth out and city life quietly fades behind you.
Somewhere between the last signal bar and the first eagle overhead, something shifts. Mergansers cut across the glassy water, loons call from the shoreline, and buffleheads bob in the current. Seals pop up beside the wake, curious and unbothered.
This is the transition — from busy to wild, from noise to tide. By the time you reach the dock, you’ve already arrived somewhere special. 🌊

February is bringing the light back.
Evenings are stretching longer over the Discovery Islands, low clouds rolling through and the sun dropping a little later each day. It’s that quiet shift toward spring — and before long, summer adventures on the water.
Long swims off the dock, paddle days through glassy channels, late sunsets, and warm nights at the Sea Chalet are just around the corner. For now, we’re soaking in these calm winter skies and looking ahead to a bright season.
Summer bookings are open.

At the eastern edge of the Discovery Islands, where British Columbia’s Inside Passage begins to narrow, Sonora Island rises steep and forested from the sea. Cut by quiet coves and tidal inlets, this is a coast shaped by current and weather rather than roads or schedules.
The Sea Chalet rests at the shoreline between cedar forest and salt water, reached only by boat. Mornings arrive with loons calling across the inlet and eagles passing overhead. As tides turn, kelp drifts beneath the dock and the channel breathes in slow rhythm.
